The Upper Room Discourse and the Rapture

    By Dr. Thomas Ice

Recently I have thought a great deal about the significance that the rapture was first revealed by Christ
the night before His crucifixion in John 13-16, in a message often called "The Upper Room Discourse.
" Christ's farewell discourse is only found in John's Gospel. If Christ's "high priestly prayer" in John 17 is
included, this section of John's Gospel (13-17) provides an introduction of church age truths, upon
which the New Testament Epistles are built upon. Jesus' teachings the night before His death, provides
an introduction to new truths that would form the core of the church age doctrine. The rapture of
the church is one of the new truths included in Christ's last minute disclosure.

Romans 13:11 This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here.

To the earth: once. One return, two phases.

So, you're a prophet? Keep in mind that The Lord names prophets; they don't name themselves.

I recall this warning given to us by Jesus Himself!

MT 24:9 "Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

There are two disctinct events where Jesus part returns and the other where Jesus fully comes down to the Earth. It doesn't take a lot of brains or the spiritual maturity of a Prophet to discern that these two scriptural passage are different.

    Rapture
1TH 4:13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.

1TH 5:1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
    Jesus second coming.
ZEC 14:3 Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights in the day of battle. 4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. 5 You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

REV 19:11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

REV 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, "Come, gather together for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and mighty men, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, small and great."

REV 19:19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the rider on the horse and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. 21 The rest of them were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.
In the Rapture Scriptures the Saints and Believers are being taken UP and Jesus meets them in the air.

The Second Coming Jesus is on His Horse with an army ready for Battle heading to the Earth and we see in Zechariah Jesus places his feet on the Mount of Olives.

So there are Two separate Events. A going up of the Believers (the Rapture) and the Second Return of Christ to finish off Satan and his followers at the end of the Tribulation.

One event comes like a thief in the night when you least expect it. An unknown timing.

The Second people see Jesus coming there is no mysterious and sudden arrival the clouds are parted and the world is watching Jesus and his army descend upon the Earth to fight the Devil and his troops. Besides it will be the end of the Tribulation period the end of 7 years of the Anti-Christ and all the prophecies of the Tribulation would have happened by this time so people should not be taken by surprise that Jesus arrives with his army.

TWO clearly different events. A Rapture of the Saved Believer (the true Church) and the Return of Christ!
