    Who Ya Gonna Call?

It was recently announced that President Obama wouldn't be attending an EU-US summit scheduled for May due, in part, to confusion caused by the EU's Lisbon Treaty coming into effect on December 1, 2009. It's not hard to see why, as highlighted by State department spokesman Philip J. Crowley who recently said:

"Up until recently, they [summits] would occur on six-month intervals, as I recall, with one meeting in Europe and one meeting here. And that was part of – the foundation of that was the rotating presidency within the EU. Now you have a new structure regarding not only the rotating EU presidency, you've got an EU Council president, you've got a European Commission president," he said.

"We are working through this just as Europeans themselves are working through this: When you have a future EU-US summit meeting, who will host it and where will it be held?" he added. "All of this is kind of being reassessed in light of architectural changes in Europe." (Source)

Years ago Henry Kissinger astutely asked the question, "Who do I call if I want to call Europe?" The answer to that question remains an unknown to this day, perhaps more so in the aftermath of the Lisbon Treaty coming into effect as President Obama's lack of travel plans reflects.

Just who are you gonna call?

The interesting aspect of this news in light of bible prophecy? The current confusion we're witnessing in terms of who is calling the shots in the European Union, the revived Roman empire of bible prophecy, as it continues its steady, albeit somewhat subdued, march to global prominence was foretold by the prophet Daniel long ago.

Daniel saw a time coming when there would be ten kings in strong positions of leadership, after which another leader, one whose mouth would speak "very great things", would emerge and subdue three of them en route to taking control of what most today refer to as the new world order. Daniel likened this coming global empire to a powerful and intimidating beast. Not only that, he foresaw a power struggle taking place within it which current events may well be a harbinger of.

Daniel 7:7: After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it [was] diverse from all the beasts that [were] before it; and it had ten horns.

Daniel 7:8: I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn [were] eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

Daniel 7:20: And of the ten horns that [were] in his head, and [of] the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even [of] that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look [was] more stout than his fellows.

Daniel 7:24: And the ten horns out of this kingdom [are] ten kings [that] shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

When the Lisbon Treaty came into effect in December 2009, it was believed that, by creating the positions of EU Council President and High Representative of the European Union, the latter position essentially being the EU's equivalent of a foreign minister, the end result would be the EU having a "stronger voice abroad". Clearly, this hasn't occurred.

In part due to the burgeoning union's decision to keep its six-month rotating EU presidency in operation alongside the newly-created positions, the EU has plenty of voices speaking for it, so many in fact that no one, even the President of the United States, knows which one to talk with or listen to when it comes to EU-US relations.

In the aftermath of President Obama's decision not to attend the May EU-US summit, the EU is trying to sort things out. The government of its current president, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero (via the rotating 6-month presidency), is vowing to work closely with the Obama administration on the issue, no doubt hoping Washington will change its mind, as well as President Obama's travel itinerary, in the weeks ahead.

All of the EU's foreign policy mechanisms, even as I write about them, are confusing. They remind me of the lyrics of Ray Parker's theme song from the 1984 movie "Ghostbusters". If we applied Parker's lyrics to today's EU, we wouldn't be able to sing the tune for all the reasons stated thus far.

    If there's something strange
    in the neighborhood
    Who ya gonna call?

Right now, no one knows how to fill in the blanks above, but bible prophecy tells us it isn't going to remain this way forever.

Someday the revived Roman empire of bible prophecy is going to find its voice, the "little horn" of Daniel 7:8, a man commonly referred to as the Antichrist. Three kings (or leaders) who will stand in the way of him becoming the clear answer to Henry Kissinger's question posed long ago are going to be among the first to see him for the beast bible prophecy foresees him becoming. Even now, as the news of our world today seems to demonstrate, the stage is being set for prophetic fulfillment.

Don't blink, Christians. You just might miss something.

Brother Mike always gets straight to the point. The EU is going to have to work out how it's going to govern and effectively communicate to the rest of the world for the whole of Europe.

I'm not sure what the problem is for the US or for any entity outside of the EU.

Jose Manuel BARROSO is the current chief executive, the President of the European Commission, and thus he is the head of the EU. In laymans terms, he's the boss and he's backed by the legislative power of the European Parliment.

By the law established under the Treaty of European Union, the EU Council is a secondary political structure and is subservient to the EU Commission. Member EU states appointed Belgian Prime Minister Herman VAN ROMPUY as the EU Council president. The Council has no (i.e. zero) legislative power and deals only with internal issues relating to further EU integration and meets every six months in one place and one place only - Brussels, Belgium.

Why would an American President or a US State Department spokesperson be confused about who to call as the European leader unless they were completely inept, incompetent and ignorant bozos?
