Nurse fired for treating Muslim women

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP)

A male registered nurse and Vietnam war Army medic has sued the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, saying he was fired for disobeying a Muslim supervisor's order not to treat women wearing conservative Islamic dress.

John Benitez Jr. filed a sex discrimination suit Wednesday in Detroit U.S. District Court.

He says a Muslim supervisor told him to refer patients wearing hijab to her. Benitez says he complied until a doctor told him to disregard the order.

Benitez says he was fired Dec. 1, 2010, told "conservative male Muslim clientele" didn't want a man treating women.

I would think the opposite is more likely and this is an excellent candidate for another step of Sharia Law being introduced into the US. (The first probably being Muslims exempt from Obmacare.)

I would like him to win, but being that he answers to the nursing supervisor and NOT doctors, I doubt it. Add to the fact that the Muslim superior will get the woman he treated to say she was uncomfortable or offended...he SHOULD have filed a complaint when told initially to refer the patients and not after being fired.

I should be exempt too since I also consider it gambling. It's like a craps shoot if you get out of it alive or not.

Why didn't she just decline his help and ask for a female nurse? I know it's against their religion to be seen or touched by a man that isn't their husband or close relative, and knowing that and believing that it was wrong, she should have spoken up at the time. This is the USA, she has the right here to ask for another nurse, just like anybody else does. You may get a nurse that you don't get along with, or if you are having certain sensitive procedures done, you may be more comfortable with a nurse of your same sex, so it's not a problem to ask for one. I don't think he should be fired at all. If any action is taken it should be that he followed the orders of someone other than his immediate supervisor, but it was still someone who was in authority over him. It's respectful to try and accomodate someones modesty beliefs (and many Christian women feel the same way) but when it's an emergency, I think the modesty and such should go out the window and they should focus only on saving the life.
