ID Card for Workers Is at Center of Immigration Plan-WSJ

Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain.

Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker.

The ID card plan is one of several steps advocates of an immigration overhaul are taking to address concerns that have defeated similar bills in the past.

The uphill effort to pass a bill is being led by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), who plan to meet with President Barack Obama as soon as this week to update him on their work. An administration official said the White House had no position on the biometric card.

What you're referring to here is already in use; the TIC Card, or something like that. If a worker works on or within a certain distance to waterways, the worker has to have this card. My son has it because of having to work on boats. The card carries basically everything about you. And, he had to pay for it! "Ain't" a cheap card to get, that's for sure.

Also doesn't sound any different than the NEXUS card I have from Homeland Security which contains my biometric info including my fingerprints. With it I breeze across the border Canada-US both ways rather than going through the usual customs/immigration lines.

In Britain, the Labour government are trying to bring in the same type of ID card for us that started at an initial cost of about £38 each, they skyrocketed to about £72 each. This is a complete and utter waste of money and just an attempt to bring in the OWG. Thank God we have an election in May coming and can get rid of these people.

It is not an attempt to stop immigration but an attempt to 'control' everybody.

We use our 'driver's license' to enter the prison...

I love how political figures say these cards are tamper proof. Hey! News flash! If man made it, it's NOT tamper proof. There will be some dark under world organization that will get hold of the technology and make illlegal forms of the identification. Period.
