Sect Waiting Out Doomsday in Penza Cave

Twenty-nine members of a religious doomsday sect, including an
16-month-old baby, are hiding in a snow-covered cave in the Penza
region, refusing to come out as they wait for the end of the world
next May, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The sect members, who liken tax identification numbers to the
apocalyptic sign of the beast, are threatening to blow themselves
up if authorities storm the cave, located near the village of
Nikolskoye, 100 kilometers southeast of Penza, regional prosecutor’s
office spokeswoman Tatyana Ostrovskaya said by telephone.

Oh boy, these things are difficult, but, nothing is impossible with God and prayer. Hope it all worked out for everyone involved.

Best I can remember, sometime around March or April people started trickling out and it's been over with now for a few months. Nothing hurt but some feelings and pride, I would imagine.

Indeed you are correct about it being over ... but 2 people did die. There were originally 35 members of this ultra-Orthodox (though 1 member claimed they were connected to the JW's) sect. Their leader, Pyotr Kuznetsov, was arrested last fall and confined to a psychiatric hospital. 24 of the group gave up this past March when heavy rains caused the roof of their shelter to collapse. The remaining 9 (2 had died) gave up in mid May after Kusnetsov's prophecy failed to come true. And 12 days ago (July 15/08) Kuznetsov was put on trial to determine whether he was criminally responsible for his actions which had resulted in the deaths of at least 2 people. The last I heard (July 22) the trial was still ongoing.
