Top lipstick brands carry highest lead levels

Four hundred of the most popular lipsticks in the US contained trace levels of lead when tested recently, confirming similar results of earlier analyses but on a much wider scale and at higher levels than previously detected.
Five L'Oreal and Maybelline lipsticks, owned by L'Oreal USA, ranked among the top 10 most contaminated brands, according to the analysis by the Food and Drug Administration. Two Cover Girl and two NARS lipsticks also landed in top 10 slots, as did one from Stargazer.
The findings exacerbate an ongoing disagreement between the FDA and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a consumer group that's been pushing the government for years to set limits for lead levels in lipsticks.

The FDA's most recent analysis found the highest level of lead, 7.19 parts per million, in Maybelline's Color Sensational "Pink Petal" lipstick. But the average lead concentration in the 400 lipsticks tested was 1.11 parts per million, very close to the average from its initial survey of about two dozen lipsticks in 2008.

"Lead builds in the body over time, and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant level exposure," Mark Mitchell, co-chairman of the Environmental Health Task Force for the National Medical Association, said in the group's statement.

Well, I don't wear lipstick, except my wedding day, and now just lip balm.

I didn't see anything but lipsticks on the list, I would assume (keeping in mind I could be wrong) that the lead is in the color itself (read: paint) Something to consider though, lip skin is extremely thin, and therefore doesn't retain moisture like normal skin, and has a natural sloughing off stage every few weeks. Unless you suffer from cracked lips, or chapped lips, using a moisturizer on a regular basis isn't necessary. So, if you might worry, only use it when necessary.

While there is much debate in the scientific community over the danger posed by the topical application of cosmetics containing heavy metals, internationally the maximum safe level seems to be 1 part per million (ppm). Here is the FDA list of lead amounts in various brands of lipstick: Lipstick and Lead: Questions and Answers. If I were a female and wore lipstick, I would be choosing from the products at the very bottom of the list.

It's interesting to me that they listed specific colors and formulations in the brands. Does that mean other colors in the same formulation contain less lead? I understand that Chanel is discontinuing the Aqualumiere line, which showed up several times on the list. The cosmetics companies that I prefer are not listed at all, but I doubt they tested all of the lipsticks from every company. I didn't see but a couple of unusual companies; everyone else was pretty mainstream.

I enjoy makeup a lot, and I used to work in the cosmetics industry. I expect most cosmetic wearers will continue to wear lipstick. In my younger days, I can remember having over 60 tubes of lipstick at one time, and we won't even talk about how many eyeshadows.

Burts Bees lipsticks have no lead, well.....one has a very negligible amount.

Also, if you want to pull lead (and mercury) from the body....the herb Cilantro is a great way to do that!

An article by M. Aga, et al, published in the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology" in October of 2001, investigated the effects of cilantro on mice with high levels of lead in their bodies. Another chelating agent, DMSA, was used as a control to validate the results of the experiment. After 25 days levels of lead were significantly decreased by the cilantro, suggesting that cilantro has lead suppressive activities.


Also, garlic and selenium (along with NAC...N-Acetyl-Cysteine[awesome stuff for anyone dealing with depression/high stress situations...keeps the happy brain stuff in the brain]) are good for pulling metals from the body.
