Default Have any of you ladies noticed

that when you go into a hardware store the employees don't take you seriously? My husband and I like to shop at Home Depot. It is the closest hardware store to us. Well, it just infuriates me that when I go alone to the store the men that work there don't take me serious. Sometimes I'll go just to pick up some things for my husband who is a contractor. I'll have a list and the boys just won't listen!

One time I was told that they wouldn't load up the trailer unless I gave them a three hour notice. They have NEVER told my husband that.

Last Saturday I bought some window shades. You know, the inexpensive ones. My husband had measured the windows so I know his measurments were correct. Well, today I tried to install them in my little house trailer. They won't fit! Uggg! Too long. I've got to take them and have them cut some more. I'm really dreading it too.

I'll stop whinning for now. I've got to toughen up. Need to learn to do more on my own.

My dh ususally sics me on them.:D I know it's not nice but when you are a female sometimes you do have to let them know you still mean business. If they don't listen to you tell them you want to see a manager since they can't do the job.Honestly, i have had more problems with women in power than men because i think the men like the idea of "helping the little woman out"

v--I'm sorry you've experienced this--you should definitely alert the manager to the problems you're having. Having worked at HD five years ago, they can get in heap big trouble for this. Square your shoulders, walk in there like you belong, look them in the eye and tell them what you want, and don't take no for an answer. Then grab the manager. Good luck, sis.
    Are we there yet?

I am sorry you are being treated like this. Really I am. I do not put up with men's attitudes where this is concerned. I go to the store, and I describe what I want and I look them in the eye and I am firm. I usually have no trouble. I remember when I went car shopping, this salesman didn't know squat about cars, and I kinda do (insofar as how much horsepower a car has, the torque, if it's AWD or not, if it has a turbo, etc.) I ask the guy "Did they change the body in this model year?" He says "yeah, it's a truck body and now it rides on hydroform rails" (whatever that is!) I say "How about the torque? Did that change? Is the horsepower rated higher now?" He looks at me like a deer in headlights and says "Uh, it rides on hydroform rails now". I said "That has NOTHING to do with what I asked you. if you don't know, just say 'I don't know, but I can find out for you'." LOL!!!!!! :laughbounce I don't mean to make fun of anybody, but I'll tell you that it's not just women that sometimes do not know what they are talking about or have a hard time with things. Know what I mean?

I work with male orthopedic surgeons, and have for the last almost 19 years. If that didn't make me tough and prepare me to not take flack from any guy, I don't know what did.

Oh, and next time they dare to tell you that you have to give them a 3 hour notice to load the trailer, look him in the eyes and FIRMLY say "My husband has done this twice before, and you've NEVER told him he had to give 3 hours notice. Where's your manager? I'd like to talk to her/him." That will take some of the wind out of them.

I am so glad I am not the only woman with this kind of problem!

When we go to Home Depot or Lowes, my hubby in tow, I am the one asking all of the questions. I know a little about alot of things, and my poor hubby had me teach him how to use a hammer. He is not a handy man by any means. But, because of this, I find they tend to look at him to answer MY question! It drives me nuts. So I started being firm and getting good eye contact. Works pretty good.

We were looking to buy a double wide to put on a basement on a hunk of land. When we went to look, I was asking all about the insulation, is it 16 or 24 on center, what kind of pitch was the roof, etc. Each question I asked, the salesman's jaw dropped another inch. At first he started answering my questions in ways he thought I wouldn't understand, but, like Ort, I was answering right back at him. Then, he started answering my questions to my hubby...ignoring me...and my hubby said, "nope, you are talking to the wrong person...she is the handy man around our house." That pretty much ended the way the salesman was acting. Then he started taking me seriously.

It is a shame that we have to go thru all that to get a guy to take us seriously. However, I must say, I would much rather be a woman in the states than a woman in Iran/mid-east!!! Doesn't matter how smart they are, they can forget it. At least we are allowed to go into the stores by ourselves!!

I agree with Ort! While my husband does most all of the HD stuff because I basically can't get out anymore, you have to get tough as nails and be firm.

A woman can be nice but tough! I worked in a Medical office and a Hospital and working with Doctors 7 days a week 12-16 hours a day will toughen you up in a heart beat!

Mentioning wanting to see the manager ALWAYS gets the sales employees attention when you aren't getting service that you should be getting.

Maybe it just depends upon the individual employees? I go to the Home Depot here a lot (I do wood refinishing, remodeling, painting) and they have always been very helpful.

It doesn't seem to matter whether dh is with me or not. They will talk to both of us.

I'm a nurse and I learned to deal with doc's also. I'm pretty tough. When I buy a car I prefer to do all the talking myself. I do bring a male relative along for decoration. He will sit there with his arms crossed just listening. I can usually get what I want out of the hardware store guys.

I am with you GloryBound. I prefer to do all the talking myself too. Actually I am a better negotiator than my dh. I am a pretty tough cookie. I am also extremely handy with tools and the like. I have never had a man at Home Depot treat me with anything other than respect...maybe its because I demand it.

I agree with how some salemen treat women. What they don't realize is I'm the one with the checkbook. Dh says my job is handling our finances and his is to see that I have something to work with.
