PA envoy to UN: We're still 'fine-tuning' form of UN bid

Palestinian representative at the United Nations Riyad Mansour on Thursday told reporters that the Palestinians were still "fine-tuning our options" on what to do next week in regards to the PA's bid for UN recognition. "The final decision will be taken in the next few days as to which path we would follow, whether it is through the Security Council for full membership or whether through the General Assembly" for a lesser upgrade of status, he said.

Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki on Thursday said that PA President Mahmoud Abbas would "present the official request for the state of Palestine to be granted full membership” to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Septemebr 23 in New York. According to Al-Malki, in recent days, he said, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton; Quartet envoy Tony Blair; and Obama representatives David Hale and Dennis Ross came to ‘Abbas, but “came empty handed. They had nothing new to offer… nothing to allow the Palestinians to climb down from the tree. We decided to go and we’re going [to the UN].”
