Turkish PM tells PA president Turkey is making "efforts" to support Palestinian statehood at the UN.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo Wednesday to discuss the Palestinian statehood bid at the UN next week, Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Al Youm reported. The Palestinian Authority's envoy to Cairo, Barak al-Farra, told reporters following the meeting that the two discussed "efforts by [Turkey] to support that [UN] bid." Abbas also thanked Turkey for its role in supporting the Palestinian national cause, Farra said. Erdoğan - who was in Cairo on the first leg of his so-called Arab Spring tour to forge stronger ties with Arab countries in the region - said Tuesday that support of Palestinian national independence was "not an option but an obligation." Speaking to the Arab League, the Turkish prime minister said “Let’s raise the Palestinian flag and let that flag be the symbol of peace and justice in the Middle East."

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday, and said that the time has come to wave the Palestinian flag in the United Nations. In their meeting, Erdogan and Abbas discussed international support for the Palestinians’ effort to be recognized as a full member of the United Nations. On Tuesday, during a speech before the Arab League, Erdogan emphasized that the recognition of a Palestinian state was “not an option but an obligation.” Moreover, Erdogan attacked Israeli policy and said that the mentality of the Israeli government is the barrier to peace in the Middle East. The diplomatic crisis between Israel and Turkey has been deepening recently, after Israel refused to apologize for an Israel Defense Forces raid on the 2010 Gaza flotilla, in which nine Turkish citizens were killed.
