Israel urges Russia: Halt sale of missiles to Syria and Iran
Israel and Russia sign military cooperation deal, a long-term agreement which may lead to additional Russian purchases of Israeli military technology.
    By Reuters

Defense Minister Ehud Barak met Monday in Russia with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and with the country's defense minister, Anatoly Serdyukov. Among the requests Barak made in his talks was that the sale of Russian missiles to Syria and Iran be halted. Barak's meeting with the Russian prime minister took place at Putin's summer home in Sochi. Following that meeting, a statement said the two discussed the entire range of security and diplomatic issues, but no details were provided. The Putin meeting was preceded by talks in Moscow between Barak and the Russian defense minister at which the two signed an agreement that lays the groundwork for Russian-Israeli military cooperation for the first time. The agreement provides for joint weapon development and exchange of information on terrorism issues.

I don't think Russia is going to listen to Israel nor Barak. Russia is going to fast down the wide path of destruction.

Nations to join in fighting terror and nuclear proliferation; agreement could also lead to Israeli weaponry being sold to Russian military.

Israel and Russia made history on Monday, signing for the first time a military agreement that will increase cooperation on combating terrorism and the proliferation of nuclear weapons, but also could lead to the sale of Israeli weaponry to the Russian military. Defense Minister Ehud Barak and his Russian counterpart, Anatoly Serdyukov, signed the agreement during a ceremony in Moscow. Later in the day, Barak met with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at his private residence in Sochi.

Russia is particularly interested in acquiring Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In 2009, Russia bought 12 drones from Israel Aerospace Industries, following its war with Georgia, during which Georgian military forces used Israeli Elbit Systems Hermes 450 UAVs. The Russian army is training 50 soldiers to operate the 12 pilotless aircraft, Interfax reported. Israel recently put plans to establish a joint venture with Russia to manufacture UAVs on hold, amid concerns regarding the transfer of sensitive technology.
