Officials: Netanyahu proposes Egypt peace summit
Israeli officials say plan raised by PM during talks with Mubarak this week. Abbas aide: Region will see important political activity in next two weeks
    Reuters Published: 12.31.09, 23:22 / Israel News

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed an Egyptian-hosted summit with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as a possible way to resume stalled peace talks, Israeli officials said on Thursday. The offer was the latest sign that progress was being made towards renewing US-backed negotiations frozen for a year. Palestinian and Egyptian officials had no immediate comment on the plan, which two Israeli officials said Netanyahu raised on Tuesday at talks in Cairo with Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak.

Abbas was due to meet Mubarak next week and US President Barack Obama's Middle East envoy George Mitchell is expected in the region in early 2010 for a new push to resume peace talks. "Israel's idea of an Egypt-hosted peace summit with Abbas was proposed during Netanyahu's talks with Mubarak," an Israeli official told Reuters. Another official confirmed Netanyahu had raised the summit idea. Netanyahu's office would not comment. On Wednesday, a spokesman, Mark Regev, said Israel hopes to "indeed see the resumption of talks with the Palestinians in the near future." Nabil Abu Rdainah, an aide to Abbas, said the region "will see important political activity in the next two weeks."

What a waste of time to meet with people who only want your destruction.

Palestinian Authority: No word from Israel on peace summit
    By Haaretz Service

The Palestinian Authority on Friday said it has not received an official request for a proposed meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that would restart peace negotiations, Ma'an news agency reported. "We didn't receive anything about such a thing," Abbas' spokesman, Nabil Abu Rdeina, told the Palestinian news agency on Friday evening. "So far what we heard was from the media." "All that we know is that the president will be going on Wednesday to meet [Egyptian President Hosni] Mubarak," he added.

Government sources on Thursday said Netanyahu had called for a meeting with Abbas later in January at the Egyptian Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh. Abu Rdeina said there was no way of knowing whether Abbas would accept such a request until he meets with Mubarak.

Something just came to mind...the time when Jehu called a meeting of all the prophets and priests of Baal.....and sent in the soldiers to clean house. Wonder if the Israelis could call a huge peace summit of all these groups that want to destroy Israel...and send an advance party of JDAM's. I bet it would be nice and peaceful afterwards...

Not necessarily a waste of time. In order to keep the world off his back more than it is now, Bibi has to look as though he is trying everything to bring peace, including selling out parts of Israel. It is quite possible that just like Ahmadinejad's talking is stalling the world long enough for Iran leadership's military plans to proceed relatively unobstructed, so too will Netanyahu's talking buy Israel time to develop the plans it needs to ensure that when it takes out Iran's nuke capability it is able to do a complete job of it.

ALL of these secular efforts to establish a "comprehensive peace" are actually part of the setting of the backdrop for the coming war that will be the fulfillment of both Isaiah 17 and Psalm 83. I'm in the process of writing the final part of a work which shows them to be the same war per the major and minor prophets of the OT.

Good thoughts Matt. I had thought the same thing at different times. There's a part of me that wonders what Israel is waiting for and another part of me that thinks they should wait until the last minute so they can collect as much information as needed so they can get as much of the Iranian nuclear program as possible. Praying Bibi knows what he is doing.
