Fayyad Proclaims Jerusalem Capital of 'Palestine'
    by Maayana Miskin

(IsraelNN.com) Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad proclaimed historic Jerusalem an Arab capital city in a speech given Saturday near Ramallah. Control of the city must be granted to a future PA state, he said. "The future of the national project and the future of a comprehensive peace in the region are both dependent on protecting Jerusalem, its status, its history, and Palestinian rights in the city,” he declared. "East Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian statehood and the state's sovereignty over its capital must be complete,” he added.

Similar statements were made by senior PA negotiator Saeb Erekat, who expressed fury Sunday over the implementation of a court order evicting two Arab families from Jewish-owned homes in Jerusalem where they had been squatting illegally for several years. "East Jerusalem is, and always will be, Palestinian,” an angry Erekat said. Like Fayyad, he threatened that Israel's presence in the entire city of Jerusalem “threaten[s] the viability of a two-state solution.”

PA Prime Minister: East Jerusalem is Our Capital
    Reported: 12:50 PM - Aug/02/09

(IsraelNN.com) “East Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine, and the future state must have full sovereignty over it,” Ma’an news reported Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad as saying on Saturday. Speaking during a conference at Birzeit University's Institute for Palestine studies entitled "Jerusalem: History of the Future,” Fayyad said that peace depended on protection of the "Palestinian capital". "The conference's title bears a meaning that all of us believe in, which is that the future of the national project and the future of a comprehensive peace in the region are both dependent on protecting Jerusalem, its status, its history, and Palestinian rights in the city," the prime minister added.

"In 1988, and in light of the peaceful, popular intifada, representatives of the Palestinian people within the Palestinian National Council decided by an overwhelming majority to make painful historic concessions for the sake of securing Palestinian rights in accordance with international resolutions," he said. "Since then, the PLO [Palestine Liberation Organization] has been committed to the peace process. Meanwhile, Israeli governments have violated every agreement related to Palestinian rights in Jerusalem.”

Chris, this is getting very, very interesting here. Jerusalem is truly a burdensome stone, or cup of trembling, in these last days, like scripture said that it would be.
