Well when come to the "island," compare CVN-78 Gerald Ford with her immediate predecessor, the Nimitz-class CVN-77 George W. Bush...

Similar placement, just longer flight deck lines and below decks spaces.

Question related to the full broadsides pic:

    1. How far does this move the ship when all 9 guns are fired?
    2. What kind of headgear is required to protect your hearing?
    3. Does the entire crew need to collectively change their shorts after each salvo?

Not an inch. Each gun had a 4 foot recoil slide which evenly distributed the shock throughout the 50,000 ton ship. (BTW - the image is of the USS Iowa (BB-61) in 1984 taking practice shots)

    2. What kind of headgear is required to protect your hearing?
Crew wore E-A-R Classic earplugs and earmuffs inside of circumaural hearing protection headsets made by David Clark Co., Inc. The model 19A reduced noise by 27dB for a total of about 30db noise attenuation. Aviation 'bosun-mates' on aircraft carriers wear much the same thing. Those sailors seen on the upper decks are experiencing the rush of a lifetime.

    3. Does the entire crew need to collectively change their shorts after each salvo?
Nah, those old fleet sailors went through enough training evolutions that they were not only used to it, but lived for the day to experience a full-broadside salvo. The gun noise completely drowned out the Slim Picken's cowboy WooHoo and YeeHaw's they were cutting loose with when that image was taken.

Hmmm...for some reason the rendering of the Ford island just seems "skinnier" to me. Maybe it's just my eyes or something.

    I like these better:

My understanding is one was ok inside, but you definitely didn't want to be on the deck. Which makes me wonder now--like during the invasion of Iwo Jima/Normany--where BB's were used in bombardment. I'm sure they had deck anti-aircraft positions manned. At least, that's what I'm assuming. So I guess, depending on where the AA guns were placed, they were OK. But I've never read these were manned during bombardments or not. So I don't know. Hmmm...

Just as a footnote--many don't know this, but on combat surface ships (in WW2--not sure these days), there was always a Marine attachment manning a deck gun--usually anti-aircraft. Which I always thought was a pretty neat fact.

I remember seeing that movie with my parents when I was about six--and complaining the B-52 they had on the screen and the shadow silhouette on the ground was clearly a B-17. My parents asked, how do you know that? I just said, I don't know--but I hate it when they "fake it" in movies.

Gettin' back to the thread OP...

Assad warns Jordan against holding a war game like Turkey and Israel

Tensions peaked again around Syria's borders with Israel, Turkey and Jordan as the first two embarked on large-scale mobilization maneuvers near those borders Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 5-6 and the Jordanian armed forces prepared to follow suit.

debkafile's military and intelligence sources report that the United States and Turkey urged Jordan's King Abdullah to hold a similar maneuver or reinforce his units on the Syrian border. But Bashar Assad decided that being forced to build up his forces on Syria's borders with Turkey and Israel was enough and a Jordanian exercise must be stopped.

Thursday, he sent his powerful brother-in-law Gen. Asef Shawqat to Amman with a stern warning for the king: If the Hashemite Kingdom lines up with Turkey and Israel and deploys extra troops on the Syrian border, Assad will order his air force to bomb Jordanian towns.

And if Israel intervenes to engage Syrian bombers, Damascus would launch surface missiles against Jordanian cities.

It was the second time this week that the Syrian ruler had threatened to punish an enemy with ground-to-ground missiles.

a lot of times they "fake" it because they do not have access to the real thing....it's not like the military lets every person access to insert what they need here for a movie

I really loved the idea they used to name the BBs after states . I guess that's just for ballistic subs now. (Cruisers named after cities, DDs after guys in the old days) I'm too much of a "traditionalist" I guess.

that seems to show the state of the christian mind(no offense please read on pleeeease) in this corrupt world where we mingle with the things of this world.... few scriptures that come to mind as to how we should see ballistics and war:
Isaiah 2:4 - "He shall judge between the nations,
    And rebuke many people;
They shall beat their swords into plowshares,
    And their spears into pruning hooks;
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
Neither shall they learn war anymore."
Matthew 5:9 - "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."

    not to mention:
    Ephesians 6:15
    Matthew 26:52

Theres no problem in wanting to defend whats yours if God so called you to draw arms....but as far as I know according to scripture we are called to fix our eyes on the invisible and on the Prince of Peace...i wonder if Jesus would sit with us and go "wow...those guns are seriously bad*** arent they? feels great shooting them onto someone's land!".....thats what the King of Glory would say right?....His children certainly do reflect that quality in Him...He LOVES ballistics...church we gotta look up man. we gotta look up. Please dont take this as an attack brothers and sisters...i mean..im full of holes...but if we keep letting the old patterns of our "old" self surface we wont be able to impact lives for Jesus, there will be no power...just as there seems to be almost a "void" of the Spirit in the church...but that is impossible because the Lord is just active as he's ever been in His true church....my goodness i sound preachy and conceived but brothers i swear that is not the goal...im nothing, nobody, and dont even have the authority to be correcting or rebuking or anything...but i cant be quiet as I watch the church being complacent with so many wrong things in OURSELVES...not the world.
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

Sorry brothers and sisters for stepping on someone's toes. I can wash them and kiss them if it is really necessary tho :D ahah shalom in the Lord :D

    Little Joe -

There is a very slim hope for the IOWA. Rescued from moth-ball slow-death to exhibit in San Pedro.
