My thoughts are that it leads to the fulfillment of Jeremiah 49:34-39... which leads to the fulfillment of Isaiah 17 (since Iran and Syria have a mutual defense agreement)... which leads to the fulfillment of Psalm 83 and Joshua 13:1-7 among others... which eventually leads to the fulfillment of Ezekiel 38/39 after a brief period of peace and safety for Israel.

Hmmm...I'd be re-thinking any future property investment plans in Damascus.

Thanks Sean. I am a little fuzzy on Jeremiah 49:34–39 so I will reread it tonight to strengthen my understanding. I will also map out the sequence of events you pointed out look into that tonight too.

No WK, I won’t be buying any retirement property in Damascus anytime soon. Have you ever heard the saying “here today, gone tomorrow?” Sorry, poor humor.

We all knew this was coming and it appears now it could be right over the horizon.

    "Retirement property in Damascus"?

    The last census reports:

    - City 2,517,750 (July 2,010 est.)
    - Metro 4,455,000

So, that's about 4 1/2 million human beings living in the metro area total. Meanwhile, Nineveh, which God sent Jonah to in order to preach repentance, had about 120,000 (at least):

"But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. He prayed to the Lord, “O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. Now, O Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

But the Lord replied, “Have you any right to be angry?”

Jonah went out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. Then the Lord God provided a vine and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the vine. But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the vine so that it withered. When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”

But God said to Jonah, “Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?”

“I do,” he said. “I am angry enough to die.”

But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?
    (Jonah 4:1-11, NIV, emphasis mine)

Scripture tells us that Damascus will be destroyed in Isaiah 17, but it also tells us:

"The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9, NASB, emphasis mine)

God is not particularly cheering to see people die; with that in mind, when we expect prophecy to be fulfilled, we would do best to look at all the ramifications that it will have. I know that sentiment may not sit well with some folks, but otherwise we are cheering on the destruction of living human beings just to see prophecy fulfilled.

    That must break God's heart...

I hear you, bro; but since the prophecy WILL be fulfilled, what we can do is pray for those who are already saved and for those who will be saved.

That is not the purview of human beings. Prophecy is of God and the ramifications have known to Him even before this world was created.

We are but observers who have been told of these future events ahead of time in witness of His omnipotence and glory. Isaiah 17, the burden against Damascus, will be the penalty, the portion paid, by a foreign enemy who dares to attempt to destroy what God has returned to the covenant land from the nations of the earth.

Negative. We praise the LORD God knowing that His prophecy will be fulfilled without question or deviation for it is within His announced divine purpose and will. Otherwise it would not happen.

True bro, but we don't have to be like the audience at the gladiatorial arenas in ancient Rome; cheering on the bloodshed with no regard to the fact that people are dying. Unlike the movies, the victims of the "games" didn't get up and walk away after the "show" and in likewise manner, neither will the people who die in the wars to come.

As Christians, it is our responsibility to learn to interpret life issues according to God's point of view, not just favoring prophecy, but understanding the Lord's core values so that we may join Him in His efforts to win each and every victory over sinful flesh.

    Ezekiel 33:11

Say to them, 'As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel?'
    1 Corinthians 15:26

The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
    Psalm 73:28

28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.
