Need HELP with Firefox 3.6.16 and Hotmail!

I'm running Firefox 3.6.16 and having some "issues!"

1. Since downloading THIS version of FF, I've noted that, on some pages, the "refresh" button doesn't seem to work. To refresh the page, I have to click on the address bar, click, "End," then hit, "Enter." This, of course, reloads the page. Also, on those pages where "refresh" doesn't work, the F5 button also has no function.
2. Since I started using FF over a year ago, I have discovered that when using the Rich Text editor in Hotmail, the "highlight" text function is GONE! But, if I run Hotmail using IE, it is there and works normally. Also, if I copy/cut and paste from a Word doc which has highlighted text, I can paste the highlighted text into the Hotmail message I am composing with no problem. Therefore, I HAVE to assume that -- for some reason -- Firefox prevents the "highlight" function in Hotmail's rich text editor from appearing. But, WHY? I have even searched FF's add-ons for some kind of "highlight" function that I can add to Hotmail, but to no avail. Does anyone know if there is a way to return this "highlighter?" (I REALLY miss it, LOL)!
   

Also -- and this is not a problem, but a question -- does anyone know if it is possible to download and add additional Emoticons/Smileys to the ones that "come with" Hotmail? I would LOVE to be able to download and add some of the ones we have available here at RF(like , , , , , , , , and, of course, ), but is such a thing even possible with Hotmail?

Any help from anyone knowledgeable about both FF and Hotmail would be VERY, VERY appreciated!

...I have, by the way, recently upgraded to v. 3.6.17...no REAL change noted, so far...

This morning I upgraded to version 4, and some of my add-ons weren't compatible. Of course, I didn't learn this until AFTER I installed it. Did some checking on-line, and there seem to be a number of bugs with version 4. I have since gone back to 3.6.17 and will wait a while for FF to apply some bug killer to v. 4.

Just my experience, your mileage may vary.

Sorry KR I can't help you with Hotmail, I have e-mail through my ISP. I'm sure Thunderbird would work better than Hotmail with FF since its their product and the price is the same as Hotmail.

I'm with you on the emoticons issue, they're great, and wish I could use all those available here on my e-mail.

Yes, I too went the rocky unknown path of downgrading to version 4 and lost a couple of gadgets. Can't be bothered re-installing so I found replacements for the most important and will learn to live without the rest until they catch up.

On the Hotmail question....have you tried running hotmail in an IE tab?

No Micah, I haven't tried Hotmail at all and I use Firefox not IE. have you tried Thunderbird? It's FF e-mail client.

There's an addon for Firefox that runs pages in an IE tab, I guess it must be a container or something. Haven't used it in ages but I thought it might fix the Hotmail gremlins.

I have Thunderbird but for the life of me can't transfer the login settings from my previous computer running Outlook. It's all a bit complitake comticlate erm sohpfisht shofisktica dagnabbit, hard to figger out. Must be an elekterikle problem, neither of the hammers I used fixed it.....

Interestingly, I also upgraded to FF 4.0 after it came out of "Beta" testing, and I have had no problems, except that two of my add-ons were incompatible. Since upgrading, FF has made one of the two compatible, and now I'm awaiting the "important" one -- the eQuake earthquake "notifier." (Which I first learned about here, at RF).

I originally went with FF over IE after playing an on-line game in which some of the players recommended FF over IE for better virus/malware protections. Also, I DO like the add-ons with FF, even if they do slow my Pentium 4 down a bit! I will say this about FF 4.0: They say that it is "six times faster than" FF 3.6.17...I don't know if it is SIX TIMES faster, BUT IT IS FASTER, for CERTAIN!

As for the original reasons that I started this thread: The "refresh" button seems to be responding much better, now, but I still can't get a "highlight" function for my Hotmail Rich Text Editor.

I miss the eQuake notifier since it's not available for 3.6.17. If you get it for version 4 , will you post something about it? I may just retry version 4 then.
