    doh! Wireless connection went nuts

    Hey guys

I'm having trouble with my lappy's wi-fi connection. Recently I installed a copy of MS Windows XP Professional SP3 I acquired through MSDN Academic Alliance (free through my University, yay!). Before, I ran XP Pro SP2, and everything worked well - I could connect to my wireless router without a problem. But now, after wasting time and energy figuring out what's wrong with my system, I still can't find the source of the problem.

Basically, what's happening is this: if I'm not connected to the router through its wired connection, the wi-fi won't connect at all. If I'm already wired and try to connect through wi-fi, the connection is established (or at least my computer says so, and I can see my lappy in my router's menu).

I should mention I'm using a Toshiba Satellite L40-18W that has a Realtek RTL8187B wireless card, and I'm using the XP drivers provided on the European Toshiba website.

If anybody has any idea how I can solve this, please let me know =/

Buzz may have more info, but go to No Internet connection after XP SP3 Update [Solved] and try some of the suggested solutions. Apparently they work for some people.

Do you have small button on the laptop that disables the wireless signal?
My son and I have laptops that have these button, sometimes when handling them the button can be pushed without realizing it.

@tjplaw: Yes, it's actually a slider button, and it's on its ON position.

@mattfivefour: I read some of the tips on that website you mentioned, but I think I'll wait for Buzz's reply.

I'm not sure that I can help you. I have a laptop and have had problems connecting before. Have you gone into your wireless signal by right clicking on it? I know sometimes you can go to diagnose the problem or you can go into internet connections and sometimes right click on the icon. I've fixed my problems before when I couldn't connect but only because I kinda played around and explored how.
