    Default Game error message

The game is Battle for Middle Earth (1). It ran great on my old computer. I tried installing it on my new computer and it wouldn't run. At first I blamed Vista. However I have since reloaded Win XP2 and it I'm still getting the same error message. The only thing I can think of is a vid card thing, but forums indicate a fix by writing an options .ini file and saving to your BFME files in the My Documents folder. This doesn't seem to work for me though (or a few others). Since EA, like many other game developers don't care about keeping products up to date after they have your money, I was hoping someone in here could decipher this error message help find a fix. Here's a snap shot.

I wish I could make the pic bigger. Thanks.

    Thanks again.

    Not a good error,
    uninstall game
delete all the game's folders, including your saved game folder (back it up if you want to save it for later)
and reinstall using different folder paths
try running the game after installation, install each patch one at time and try the game again
If the game still does not run after each patch, make a shortcut and run the game in different compatibility modes.
Also make sure all back ground programs are not running, it might be competing with other software like an antivirus program

make sure AGP is enabled in your graphics card
make sure the same IRQ addresses are not being shared with your Graphics and Sound card.
Update your video card drivers and directX

close all programs running in background and turn off all the services you dont need, also increase your virtual cache

the dvd version of the game has a bug causing the processor to overheat causing the crash

Thanks Buzz. I've tried all kinds of different approaches. This seems to be unique to EA games. I had the same type of problem with C&C Generals. Apparently the game needs to write a file in the My Documents directory to run. For some reason it won't do it. It runs fine on my older machine with the same anti-virus (Bit Defender) so it seem to be something to do with the video card. There is a fix that works for some people, but naturally, not for me.

Did you try writing the file for it or copy /paste it to your documents folder?

Yep. EA has gaming forums and there are a couple of threads on this particular issue. I copy-and-pasted a couple of different opiions.ini folders, along with an empty "maps" folder as suggested but it didn't work for me. The same issue exists for BFME II and that game also crashes at the second splash screen. I've come to believe that it's a hardware incompatibility that EA is refusing to address.

    Default Geforce video card?

If so, is the Geforce nView desktop manager enabled? You will know if it is, because you will be able to change screen resolutions from the geforce icon in the system tray. Disable it, or better yet shut it off from system startup.

For some reason, with nView enabled it messes up EA games, especially C&C Generals and the expansion pack.

    What you do is:Start>run
At the run command type in msconfig. On the tabs at top click the startup tab: You should see a box with a check in it named nwiz.exe/ install. Uncheck it click apply. The system will need to reboot itself. After restart see if that improves the game and stops the error.

All changes can be easily undone.

Interesting. I'll give it a try, thanks. It'll probably be a while before I respond again because I'm hip deep in other stuff right now. Thanks.

Does this have to be done prior to installation of the game?

Yes it will need to be disabled before installing the game. IMO, it appears to corrupt certain files during install. Once the game is installed it does not seem to bother game play if it is running after install.

I don't know if its driver version for the Geforce card that causes a conflict or game file corruption or the Nwiz service (my experience) running during install of C&C.

I hope this helps resolve the game issue, so you can take on the GLA Forces. :)

Thanks. I've visited a few forums at NVidia .com and apparently there is a lot of dissatisfaction with NVidia support for older games.

Hey! Thanks it worked. I still had to write an options.ini file for BFME but at least I can play it now. Thanks again!!
