    Default Sometimes reality yields the best humor

    I was having a heart to heart discussion with my oldest daughter's boyfriend and father of her baby. I was discussing how essential it is that he at the age of 28 needs to get some good skills that will enable him to be able to feed his family.

    Today I find out that he has enrolled in Culinary School...

    Oh boy, Faith, thats not funny! If you run a search, you'll likely find out that culinary schools have been in trouble lately because students end up with heavy debt and low wages. See if you can warn him before its too late!
    Psalm 73:28

    28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;
    I will tell of all your deeds.

    I know, there is nothing I can do about it. I have talked to both him and my daughter about being very wise in their schooling choices. I tried to convince them both that computer science was the best way to go and they could probably both get decent jobs in that industry, but she wants to be a paralegal and he wants to be a chef, or run/manage a restaurant. They are young and they think they know everything. It is so frustrating.

    Oh dear, I can just imagine. Your daughter will probably be OK with paralegal, lawyers are still making money, but your son is in for a rough ride. And yes, at that age they do think they know everything. Didn't we all think that when we were in our 20's?

    Sad to say this because the job kind of sucked, but the grocery business can end up paying pretty decently. Cashiers make decent money. I made $15 an hour as a frozen foods manager. Not the best money, but pretty good when you consider most of my town made minimum wage.

    All you can do is be there for the grandkids. I have learned that the hard way with my younger siblings. My older brother is now studying to become an electrician and is working as an apprentice by day, taking classes at night. So far he loves it. So if school doesn't work out for them, suggest a trade school. They are dying for some workers there because so many folks are taking the college route. There's also some good money in it if you are good and stick with it.

    Hmm, I wasn't aware of the ability of Culinary school graduates to be able to get a job. I do know personaly I have an Associates in Applied science and a Bachelor's of Business Administration, and I myself get more out of my Associates degree than the Bachelor's degree. Though I'm working on making that pay off too. I HAD heard that people that had gone into a career in the computer sciences were finding it difficult to find a job due to a glut in the number of people receiving degrees in that field. But I could have been misinformed about that.

    As far as people in their 20's and younger thinking they know it all, well I can vouch for that. I also remember what one of my high school teachers; my English Comp 2 teacher, who said something to me that still sticks with me to this day. That he thought he knew everything when he was younger too, but as he got older the more and more he realized the less he knew.

    Well the culinary student isn't my son and I won't call him that until he has the decency to marry my daughter. My daughter might be okay, I read an article about a man that had a law degree and we was suing the law school because the country is so inundated with laywers that he cannot find work. Since she is a paralegal and not an acutal attorney hopefully she will stay employeed.

    I saw last night during the "Obama - Google interview" that we are giving out work permits for engineers because apparently there is a shortage of engineers in the country. The woman who asked the question has a husband that is an engineer and was unemployeed.

    My ex-husband who now has a felony charge against him was able to get a job as a computer engineer. That was the field he was in before his felony and he has 20 years of experience with Microsoft (they fired him when he was convicted). Anyway, if a convict can get a job I don't see how it could be hard for others. It might just be a problem of location. Some areas of the country may not have enough jobs for that area.

    I know that so far North Texas has not really been affected by the high unemployement rate. If you want a job they are usually there to be found. The real problem is under-employment.
