Obama Raises Record $32M in 4th Qtr Primary Funds ($10M more than Hillary)
Sen. Barack Obama, whose initial surge in the polls has been fading in recent weeks, shocked the political world yesterday, when he announced that he had raised $32.5 million in the second quarter of 2007, a record for a Democratic presidential candidate, and significantly more than the $27 million Sen. Hillary Clinton is thought to have raised. Obama's lead is in fact more significant than it looks, because the vast majority of the cash he raised this quarter is available for the primary rather than the general election.
The AP reports Obama outraised Clinton "by $10 million in second-quarter contributions that can be spent on the Democratic presidential primary contest, aided by the contributions of 154,000 individual donors."
Obama's campaign "on Sunday reported raising at least $31 million for the primary contest and an extra $1.5 million for the general election from April through June, a record for a Democratic candidate."
