Dead Marine's father ordered to pay protesters' legal costs

(CNN) -- The father of a Marine whose funeral was picketed by the Westboro Baptist Church says an order to pay the protesters' legal costs in a civil claim is nothing less than a "slap in the face."

"By the court making this decision, they're not only telling me that they're taking their side, but I have to pay them money to do this to more soldiers and their families," said Albert Snyder, whose son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, was killed in action in Iraq in 2006.

Members of the fundamentalist church based in Topeka, Kansas, appeared outside Snyder's funeral in 2006 in Westminster, Maryland, carrying signs reading "You're going to hell," "God hates you" and "Thank God for dead soldiers."

Among the teachings of the church, which was founded in 1955 by pastor Fred Phelps, is the belief that God is punishing the United States for "the sin of homosexuality" through events such as soldiers' deaths.

Margie Phelps, the daughter of Fred Phelps and the attorney representing the church in its appeals, also said the money that the church receives from Snyder will be used to finance demonstrations. But she also said that the order was a consequence of his decision to sue the church over the demonstration.

You are absolutely correct, bro! I wasn't trying to say because Bill paid it everything was now fine. Only that God had provided for this family in this matter. I still think someone should pay for an appeal of the judgment. It was flagrantly outrageous.

These are our brethren? They have been weaned and fed the real meat of The Word? This is over-the-top outrageous, utterly disrespectful and absolutely unChristian. Such a church preaches not the Love of Christ, but the hate of Satan. Lucifer lives in that house. Thank God I was not present to witness such barbaric hate from these people. It would have been like our Lord's thrashing the money changers. The witness displayed by these "Christians" has hurt the whole of the Bride of Christ.

That the court sided with these barbarians does not really surpirse me. Engaging the legal system is the correct non-violent response to such an atrocity. However, the fact of the matter is that Truth, Justice and Common Sense have been turned upon their head in this country and we only have ourselves to blame for being sheeple to allow it. I do not believe this situation in our nation is judgment from God, I believe it is the fruit being repeaped because millions of God-fearing people failed to act to stop the godless socialist take-over of this nation. The manifestation of this take-over is now evident in every aspect of life and politics in America. It disgusts me to no end.

Think about it. Have all of our fathers, grandfathers, uncles, cousins, unrelated breathren and heros like Cpl. Matthew Snyder who've laid their life down in vain defending our God-given Constitution, Freedoms and the rule of law died in vain when scenes such as this are increasingly becoming the norm? A father cannot bury his beloved son in sloemn dignity and peace?

I expect that most of decent America will be outraged and a very severe backlash is comin' round the mountain.

Corporal Matthew Snyder and his father Albert will not be forgotten. I say that Albert Snyder does not bear this financial burden alone, and i will do my utmost to see that he doesn't, so help me God.

I agree with all of the above and add the following comments....as Bill O'Reilly mentioned on his show, this church in no way should be reflective of the entire Baptist denomination. That's probably understood, but I'm sure the Baptists cringe whenever this group makes the news.

And, also...a little bit off subject, but relating to military respect....I greatly recommend a movie made a couple of years ago called 'Taking Chance'. It stars Kevin Bacon and it documents the return of a young slain soldiers body to his hometown. Bacon is the officer who accompanies it. The movie is very moving and very respectful of our troops. I think it should be shown in every school in America.

I was reading the comments and this women right here, well dude I really think it sums it all up on what we're saying...

I am a woman that believes in God, and I cannot stand people claiming they are believers that act this way. This is the reason why Christianity is bashed and hated by so many because they think we are all like this disgusting group of people. Protesting a funeral is absolutely appalling to me and then to also bash the soldiers that protect our country is even worse! For the church that protests funerals and the people that are members who are judging our soldiers... you better read your Bible and I mean REALLY read it. Dont come up with your own idea of what it says read it as it is. Judge Not Lest YOU be Judged. Love your Lord Your God with your whole heart, soul, and mind, and Love Your Neighbors as Yourself. It says in the scriptures that the leaders of the church and those that believe are MORE accountable for their actions, so when you misguide and teach individuals hate God will deal with YOU!!!! I am sorry for the families that suffer from the disgrace of this church.
