Update from U.S. Senator John Cornyn
Friday, July 24, 2009
It is becoming increasingly clear that President Obama’s rushed, artificial timeline for health care reform is not supported by the American people, and even members of the President’s own party. We can all agree that we must slow down on health care legislation, to make sure to get this right and enact reform that will truly improve our health care system, reduce costs and ensure more Americans gain access to quality care.
As President Obama continues to push rash deadlines on Democrats’ flawed proposals, non-partisan experts and medical professionals are speaking out. The world-renowned Mayo Clinic, a non-profit clinic that President Obama has frequently referenced as a top-notch clinic providing affordable, quality health care, said this week that the proposal offered by House Democrats, “aren't patient-focused or results-oriented,” and "the real losers will be the citizens of the United States." And Douglas Elmendorf, director of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office that is tasked with scoring health care proposals, testified before Congress that instead of reducing costs, the current proposals would “significantly expands the federal responsibility for health care costs." I hope that the many voices now concerned about this Washington takeover of our health care system will cause President Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress to re-evaluate their desire to force a health care reform bill through Congress so quickly, at the expense of the American people.
Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee held the confirmation hearing for Judge Sotomayor. I had the opportunity to ask Judge Sotomayor to explain some of her troubling past statements and her judicial philosophy to determine what kind of justice Judge Sotomayor would be if confirmed. Unfortunately, I cannot support Judge Sotomayor’s confirmation because she failed to convince me that, as a Supreme Court Justice, she will adhere to a restrained judicial philosophy that delivers fair, impartial, and equal justice for all. Issues of deep importance to Texans are sure to come before the Supreme Court in the coming years, like whether or not to weaken the Second Amendment right of Texans to keep and bear arms. I am also concerned that the Court will fail to protect the Fifth Amendment private property rights of Texans from cities and states that want to condemn their property for non-public uses, and that the Court will expand the right to abortion and other liberal social policies that appear nowhere in the Constitution.
I was pleased to announce this week that I have been appointed to serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee. Agriculture has always been at the heart of Texas' economy and our farmers and ranchers play a vital role in our state's economy. I look forward to advancing Texas' priorities and ensuring our state's agriculture industry continues to thrive. With Texas facing a severe drought that is threatening the livelihood of so many farmers and ranchers in our state, I will use my seat on the Committee to continue pushing for immediate relief that will help our state recover from the enormous losses associated with the drought.
