my take on it-----
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead
I think this means that Jesus wants us too show we believe in him by doing ''works'' and the works he means
is proclaiming the gospel and living as Christ like life as we possibly can.
I think it means we are to do what
Jesus commanded the apostles to do, proclaim the gospel to the lost and teach them all the things Jesus
taught the apostles .
So the works to me is doing and showing you are a faithful servant to the lord by doing what Jesus taught and commanded.
I see this as God ordained ''works'' and NOT man made'' works. ''
''Works "" as in doing the Works of the Lord.
I said I think so don't hate me but here are just some other ways we find the word ''works'' and the different
context it is used in;
Matthew 11:2
Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
Deuteronomy 15:10
Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.
Judges 2:7
And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.
Judges 2:10
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
1 Chronicles 16:9
Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.
1 Chronicles 16:12
Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;
Job 37:14
Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
So we see here there are works of God
And here are works men did on command from God;
Numbers 16:28
And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.
Matthew 16:27
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
John 6:28
Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
John 8:39
They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
John 9:4
I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
John 10:37
If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
And here it is in a nutshell ----Galatians 2:16
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
I belive James was not talking about works of the law but rather doing the works of God---'' Faith without works in God is dead, ''thats what i think he ment,and not the works of the law
John 6:28
Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
