To avert a possible catastrophe – this time set for February 2013 – scientists suggest confronting asteroid 2012 DA14 with either paint or big guns. The stickler is that time has long run out to build a spaceship to carry out the operation.
NASA's data shows the 60-meter asteroid, spotted by Spanish stargazers in February, will whistle by Earth in 11 months. Its trajectory will bring it within a hair’s breadth of our planet, raising fears of a possible collision.
The asteroid, known as DA14, will pass by our planet in February 2013 at a distance of under 27,000 km (16,700 miles). This is closer than the geosynchronous orbit of some satellites.

They should have the orbit pretty well nailed down by now. 16700 miles is still outside the atmosphere and 2 earth diameters away.

I think we should stop posting stories from Russia Today. It is a state-run television and web presence and has a vested interest in spreading fear and uncertainty in the West. And if you go to the NASA asteroid near miss page you will see that in the past 60 days there have been 21 what astronomers call "very close approaches" (asteroids coming within.01 AU of earth) and 3 within .0004 AUs. (An AU—astronomical unit—is equivalent to the distance from earth to the sun, approx 93 million miles.) This is normal. Nothing to worry about. Of course, one day one MIGHT possibly hit the earth, but if you are going to worry about it, then you should worry every single day because there have been 330 "close approaches" (asteroids coming within half an AU or less from earth) since January 5th alone!

Well, the headline is surely an eye catcher, even if it's from a less than reliable source. The fact that there are so many close approaches that don't hit, shows that God's hands are protecting us. If a big one does get through, it will be because He allows it to. It seems like we are inundated with doom and gloom stories now. It's a big thing on cable stations such as the History channel. There are probably many reasons for this, one is that it sells, another may be in moving the masses to put their allegiance with man, trusting in man for solutions to our seemingly precarious situation.
