Modern Towers of Babel?

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” Genesis 11:4

Earlier in the week I read an interesting story on the economics on the massive skyscrapers which various countries, including the US rush to build. It turns out that the building of a massive skyscraper has been tied very well with economic downturns following their completion. The story just made me think back to the Tower of Babel. The hearts of unrepentant and unsaved mankind still seeks to build towers reaching to the heavens to make a name for themselves as they scramble to have the "tallest building in the world" and impressive skylines.

Article is flawed in it's idea. the buidling of Skyscrapers is not the reason for the economic collapse nor is it a predictor as we have been building them non stop since they were created, it's the greed of people. Buidling vertical makes sense when city land is at a premium or you are unable to purchase the surrounding land (land locked). The collapses are directly related to people getting GREEDY becase they have a love for more moeny.......caused by the sinful nature of man.

The article should say that when people get too greedy and do stupid stuff (like get or build big expensive things) then the economic collapse is iminent (like it is now)

Example company A gets money and builds a huge new headquarters to show off their success and winds up going bankrupt becuase they could no longer pay for it due to loss of business

The article actually agrees with your point that this is an outward symptom of over-extended credit and poor allocation of resources. What interests me is the underlying commonality in attitudes which causes men to ignore prudence and obedience to God to go after their own pursuits.

We understand that God was not concerned that the original Tower of Babel would literally reach into Heaven, but God had to deal with the underlying disobedience and wickedness that led to the attempt to build the Tower. It would seem to me that the spiritual conditions which led mankind to try and make the world wonder at their level of building and create the world's tallest building has much in common with the original attitudes exhibited during the building of the Tower of Babel. It also has much in common with the desire many have to donate money towards various efforts in order to have their name on a building.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12
