BBC News - David Cameron says the UK is a Christian country

This is the good news:

David Cameron has said the UK is a Christian country "and we should not be afraid to say so".

In a speech in Oxford on the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, the prime minister called for a revival of traditional Christian values to counter Britain's "moral collapse".

He said "live and let live" had too often become "do what you please".

The PM said it was wrong to suggest that standing up for Christianity was "somehow doing down other faiths".

But this is the bad news:

Describing himself as a "committed" but only "vaguely practising" Christian, the PM admitted he was "full of doubts" about big theological issues.

But he staunchly defended the role of religion in politics and said the Bible in particular was crucial to British values.

Yes you are right however am impressed that he came out with what he did, as they say from little acorns great oak trees grow.

Sighs....where to start with this one?

Yes, it's great that he truly believes that the Bible is necessary, but on the other hand, if he's telling folks he also has some doubts and is a barely practicing Christian, that's not likely to convince anybody here. So basically, he ruined his own argument.

There's no such thing as a "practicing Christian". It's not an exercise, lifestyle or profession. I am getting so very weary of people claiming to be Christian not professing the simple truth that being a Christian is not what YOU do but what has been done FOR you. Why is this so hard to grasp? Why can't one of these "christian" politicians just stand up and say it?

IMHO Cameron did more harm than good by reinforcing the misconception that Christianity is all about morals, regular church attendance and being a so-called good person.
