BRUSSELS – The euro is under siege — and the next few days will be crucial.

Financial markets are betting heavily that Greece's crushing debt could drag down the euro currency and force reluctant EU leaders into an embarrassing bailout.

(And what "leaders" would that be in Europe? Is there such a thing?)

Investors are pressing EU leaders to state clearly what they would do if Greece were to face default — and eyeing up other indebted nations such as Portugal, Spain, Ireland and even richer countries such as Italy and Belgium.

Under the various treaties of the EU, it is illegal for the EU to bail out any member country that runs into financial difficulty. Members of the European Parliament are very seriously concerned that the European Commission and member countries' leaders may try to bend their own rules to help out Greece and could directly oppose and stop any rescue package meant for Greece and other states. In other words, the EU could soon be at civil war and could disintegrate permanently. The current situation with Greece possibly defaulting on its nation debt is the main occupation of the world's financial markets.
