Pentagon Orders Military to Stock Abortion Pill

The morning-after pill will soon be available at U.S. military bases around the world.

For the first time, the Pentagon has ordered all military facilities to stock the emergency contraception, a military spokesman announced late last week.

The decision follows the recommendation of an independent medical panel, which determined the drug should join the military's required list of medications that must be stocked at each U.S. military facility.

The pill is designed to prevent fertilization, but it can also prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.

The Bush administration tried to keep the morning-after pill out of the military. However, pro-choice groups fought for women in the armed forces to have the drug.

Wendy Wright of Concerned Women for America told CBN News the pill is "a political tool for abortion advocates" and that "the military needs to focus on discipline and proper behavior, because lives depend on it, not promoting risky behavior."

Defense Department spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said she did not know when the policy would be implemented.

I had heard from some military friends that the military was getting tired of women getting pregnant to get out of going overseas, even when most of the time they weren't on the front lines. Wonder how long it'll be before they start requiring women to get their tubes tied when they first join?

While I agree that the military SHOULD be promoting healthy behavior, the military DOES tend to think that if you were mature enough to sign up and give four years of your life to your country, you SHOULD know better than to sleep around. Unfortunately, having lived on bases for four years and having a daughter in the military, there are some bases that have worse morality issues than some frat and sorority houses. The military is too busy preparing our soldiers for the eventuality of war. They don't have time, except in the worst of cases, to be Morality Monitors and they can't have the female soldiers getting pregnant on the government dime. While I'm pro-life, I do understand where their mindset is.

I live in a military community and I understand where the government is coming from on this issue. Am I pro-life absolutely! While there are many, many, many, many females who serve their country with the utmost honor and distinction, there are some active duty female who get pregnant just to get out of assignments. This causes a burden on the units to find another soldier (male or female) to fill the slot being vacated by a pregnant female. I believe people should not have children to get out of doing a job. While I would love the chaplaincy have far more influence on our active duty's moral mindset, I know that lax morals are an issue not only for the military community, but for the American population in general.

I agree with you both, I can see the military's point of view on it. It's appalling how many women take advantage of getting pregnant on purpose in the military. Sighs. But I do not believe this abortion pill is the answer either.

To be honest, I would probably tell the woman tough, you're still going overseas. You're still going to do your duty that you signed up for, and if you're still there when it's time for the baby to arrive, you'll be having it there. Betcha that would stop a lot of women from pulling this.....

In other words it often amounts to a chemical abortion. In conscience, I do not want to see that happen at all. I don't want to be drawn into supporting abortion unwittingly by having my tax dollars pay for it either.

This is a bad idea.

An impossibility. You cannot put other soldiers in danger or compromise the safety of a child just because mom decided to make a baby. And that is not going to stop them from fooling around anyway. For many of these kids, this is the first time they have been away from mom and dad and it's "let the debauchery begin!" Sad commentary, but true.

I heard, or saw, some disturbing facts regarding women in the military the other day. This survey (don't know which one) said that one-third of women in our military are raped... Seventy one percent of women said they were sexually assaulted or raped while serving... Ninety percent of the women had been sexually harassed while serving.

That is absolutely disgraceful, I had no idea it was that bad. Another well-thought out idea from our illustrious government, having women in the military.
