Default Baptists and Muslims: different books, common word

Baptist-Muslim engagement may be the most unanticipated and underreported religion story of 2009 with the far-reaching potential to advance the common good. Time will soon determine whether it is a fool's errand or a fullness-of-time movement.

It began in January 2009 with a three-day meeting in Boston between 40 Baptist leaders and 40 Muslim leaders. Papers were presented. Prayers were said. Meals were shared. Business cards were exchanged. Promises for follow-up steps were made.

Also in January, the Baptist World Alliance, the largest global Baptist body, released its official response to the Islamic letter known as "A Common Word Between Us and You."

Two months later, the BWA dedicated a baptismal center on the Jordan River where John the Baptist is thought to have baptized Jesus. The land was a gift from the Jordanian government, facilitated by Prince Ghazi Bin Muhammad, who is the chief architect of the "Common Word" initiative.

On the July 4th weekend in Washington, D.C., well-known Baptist preacher Rick Warren spoke at the annual meeting of the Islamic Society of North America.

Off the public radar was another development. The Baptist Center for Ethics, better known for its Web site, EthicsDaily.com, was invited to produce an hour-long documentary that will begin airing on ABC-TV stations in January 2010. The documentary is titled "Different Books, Common Word: Baptists and Muslims."

At the heart of the documentary is the recognition that Baptists and Muslims have different sacred books but a common word--love the neighbor. The documentary tells five stories about Muslims and Baptists who pursue neighbor love through interfaith dialogue and interfaith action, stories that will surprise viewers.

These stories run counter to the dominant attitude among Baptist clergy toward Muslims. Too many Baptist preachers in America demonize the Prophet Muhammad and smear Muslims as terrorists, fearing Islam as a dangerous religion. Other fearful clerics avoid hate talk. Instead, they talk about the need to win Muslims to Jesus as the only way to relate to them.

We take another approach. We believe the Bible calls us to love our neighbors, not as a means of conversion, but because it's the right thing to do. And the right thing for goodwill Baptists to do is to speak up for Muslims in our culture of anger and to reach out with a hand of partnership.

Our documentary is about replacing the negative narratives with positive ones. We hope it will bring Baptists and Muslims together on the local level for conversations and community-building. If Muslims and Baptists are peacemakers together in the United States, then they will show the rest of the world a better way forward.

On Faith Panelists Blog: Baptists and Muslims: different books, common word - Robert Parham
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place." 2 Chronicles 7:14-15, Holy Bible

Father, collapse the EU immediately, and free the member states, including the UK, in Jesus' name. Lord, save the USA and Israel too. Amen.

" Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty." (2 Corinthians 6:14-18, KJV)

Because that is exactly whae Paul did with the Greeks. He engaged in harmonious dialogue with them everywhere he went, to present a better way. Blah, blah, blah.

What a load of crap. These people need the Gospel. The need to be confronted with its sting and offended with its implications. The need to hear the good news clearly before its too late for some of them.

Notice a couple of sign-post themes?

    "a common word--love the neighbor"
Hmmm, love thy neighbour isn't exactly what muslims of any stripe are famous for, or most called Christians nowadays, but at least we have a direct line to the only Source of agape, and we don't even feature highly among the 0.1% of suicide bombers that aren't loyal muslims.

    "interfaith dialogue and interfaith action"
Yes, I've seen this stuff in action before. Darfur, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia are shining examples of it. Colombia has a showcase example developing now.

    "fearful clerics avoid hate talk"
...in the West. That's because truth isn't pc, and the right to be offended has been taken away along with free speech/freedom of religion, unless you're a member of the crackpot fundie Christians in which case nobody cares how offended you are as long as you do it silently and preferably invisibly and with your wallet open.

    "conversations and community-building"
Our communities were built; with God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit honoured, feared, loved and obeyed for the most part, but this has changed. As for "conversation"...Islam isn't receptive to the Hegelian dialectic but will exploit it to wreck our culture so they can build their "community". Iran is an example of a modern islamic community, so is Gaza.

"Our documentary is about replacing the negative narratives with positive ones"
No spin please, just the truth even if it hurts. Oh I see, your boss doesn't do the truth, it harms his cause....then Truth will come physically, and He will be very, very righteously angry.

It looks as though the OWR is on its way to completion. Tony Blair has said that the Alliance of Civilizations only wants to eliminate the "radical" elements in religion. That would be us since the AoC wouldn't dare try eliminating Islam.

I'm in my 50's, and I'm amazed at how the enemy has been able to almost completely destroy true Christianity in the public realm. If I had been able to see into the future when I was a child, I wouldn't have believed what I see now.

    Robert,

Exactly the correct Scripture to quote. I think in this report we're seeing the first glimpses of the "Christian" apostasy that will follow in short order.

And I felt quite ill when I heard Rick Warren's words at the ISNA's annual meeting in DC. ISNA is front group, along with CAIR, of the Islamic terrorists of HAMAS begun by the equally terrorist Muslim Brotherhood (al-Ikhwan al-Muslimuun). They are both Federal unindicted co-conspirtiors from the Holy Land Foudation (HLF) trial which found the HLF quilty of funding HAMAS who wages war and kills innocent Israeli men women and children. Imagine, an American Baptist pastor honoring Islamic terrorists in Washington, D.C. Yes, this is apostasy defined. It is also flat out treason.

I agree with you 100%. We believers are the radical elements that they see to be a threat.

Amazing love! How can it be that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

You can tell how the world feels about true Christianity by the way that it and we are portrayed on TV. Christianity seems to be portrayed as a religion that only bigots and the radical fringe would belong to. Christians are portrayed more and more often as being terrorists, bigots and mentally ill. If Christians focus on being humanisitc, then they are are the "good" Christians.

I don't recognize but one Holy Book and that is the Holy Bible the word of God.. They are certainly not speaking for me or true Christians.

Muhammad demonized himself. He was the devils advocate. All Muslims are not terrorists but the majority of terrorists are Muslim.

I recon this is their way of attacking true Christians by marginalizing them and then demonizing true Christians as the evil ones instead of Muhammad?..
    [U]

they quote Out of context "love the neighbor" by lifting it out of the text...Jesus replied "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37Jesus replied:" 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[c] 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:38-39

anyone who ignores the First and greatest commandment cannot fulfill the 2nd because they are part of a whole. The second hinges on the First-- loving God Cannot go out of order or they are nullified. we cannot love love our neighbor as ourselves until we love God first and we cannot do that.. Only Jesus can. WE have to be in a right relationship with Jesus because He is the Only one who satisfies God the Father in every way.. Love-John 3:16. our love is not God's love...

quote-"Our documentary is about replacing the negative narratives with positive ones. If Muslims and Baptists are peacemakers together in the United States, then they will show the rest of the world a better way forward."

so, they want to decontextualize the Bible... They ferret the Bible little by little, cherry picking to their own destruction.

Do they really think that Muslims are working for "peace"? They lack judgment and are sadly mistaken..Muslims are using those who are naive and liberal. Those who are cloaking Christianity because they are hiding behind their hypocracy.

We know what God says "The lips of the righteous nourish many but fools die for lack of Judgment"-Proverbs 10:21. "The Mouth of the Righteous brings forth wisdom but a perverse tongue will be cut out"-Proverbs 10:31
