    Default Eating and Drinking

Matt. 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,

I would like to know, what is the context of the "eating and drinking" in this verse?

Is this an atmosphere of sitting down with family and friends for a normal meal, or is it saying there was a partying atmosphere as in indulging in fine foods and drinking alcohol?

I was wondering if it might give some insight as to how the people were behaving in Noah's day compared to the behavior of people in these last days.

    Thanks!

Business as usual.....let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die. Complete unconcern about why they're here and where they'll end up. Remember the sin of Sodom Ezekiel 16:49. Scoffing at the warnings of imminent judgement to come....and for the churchians, scoffing at the fundies for going on about something called a Rapture 2 Peter 3.

Strangely enough, as a child I believed the bits of Truth I got from amongst the mumbo jumbo of ritualistic churchianity I was exposed to, including the belief that at some unannounced time He would snatch His people up...until school drummed even the belief in Him out of me (or perhaps just drove it underground). Praise The Lord Jesus Christ that He came after me to rescue me. A horrible thing...as a newly repentant Christian, at a church I went to, the "pastor" told me I read the Bible too much, and some deacons replied to my statement about looking forward to The Lord's return...."Oh, hopefully not for a long time yet."

Interesting. Business as usual and scoffing, that is what's going on today. So, I would suspect that even though we see signs of the decline of the US and even more so on the horizon, it's likely that it will all hold together until the Rapture? Of course, no one can say with 100% certainty (or can we?) but studing the scriptures says that things will be business as usual?

That hardly seems like it sounds like an economic collapse. Am I looking at this too narrowly? Could the US economy (or anything else) collapse and the rest of the world is "business as usual"?

**A pastor told you that you read the Bible too much?

Thank you for answering my question.

The Lord compared the unknown day of His return to the time of Noah and the time of Lot. In both cases, things changed rapidly, but The Lord's folk were told in advance, were made ready in advance, and were taken out of the calamity.

As to financial collapse....there was a great depression in the 30's but the end didn't happen. There were two horrible wars....but we're still here. There is no telling how bad things are going to get, but you know what? The Lord is in control, always has been and always will be.

Business as usual means this world will continue as it has since the Fall...dog eat dog, look out for number 1, etc, but only by Divine permission. Folks get saved when all their imagined self-sufficiency gets stripped away and the only lifeline is The Lord Jesus Christ...it's sad that our pride and selfishness and hard-heartedness forces The Lord to go to such extreme lengths.

Bearing in mind that He saved us from Hell because He loves us, anything less than the lake of fire is a blessing, meaning any kind of earthly suffering is infinitely less than what we deserve, and also infinitely less than what He voluntarily took upon Himself.

So who knows, maybe the financial system will collapse before the Rapture, maybe it won't...it's all a huge farce anyway, phony money made out of nothing, just vanity. There is no prophecy to be fulfilled before the unknown return of The Lord. That means He could return any moment. Kinda puts a different perspective on things, a perspective that the devil works hard to prevent. There could be major upheavals before the Rapture, but whatever they may be will be nothing compared to what happens after. Keep your eyes on The Lord, He is the Rock.

Yes, a "pastor" took offence at my literacy in Scripture. If I were more ignorant he would feel more secure in his job, which proves he isn't a pastor at all. The thing is, I'm still woefully lacking, a spiritual dimwit, and if it weren't for my Shepherd I'd be a lambchop by now.

In other words: they didn't care that he was coming, and just went about daily life. Keep in mind that this is talking about the world, and not just the United States.
