I'm reading in 1 Chronicles 29:4-5 and I am in awe of the amount of material that was used in the temple. This is David passing to Solomon the requirements for the building of the temple. The margin notes in my Bible (NIV) say that 1 talent was about 75 pounds and that the gold given was 3,000 talents....plus 7,000 talents of silver. And that's just what David contributed! The other leaders gave 5,000 more talents of gold, 10,000 of silver, 18,000 of bronze and 100,000 talents of iron!! Not to mention the various precious stones. These amounts are just staggering to me. We are talking tons, TONS of gold. No wonder the Romans tore the place apart. But my question is.....are these amounts correct? And, if so, how was it all used....I mean, was the temple solid gold? I guess it puts in perspective the disciples marvellling at the size and magnitude of the temple, but still, I just find the amounts.....incredible.
