    Default General questions

Anyone know why Jerusalem is called "spiritually Sodom and Egypt"?

    Revelation 11:8-9

8And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

9And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
Also, do you think, when Jesus returns as the King of the world, will we address Him as Immanuel or Jesus? Since in the old testament it said His name would be Immanuel (God among us).

What say ye? Just always wondered if there were answers to these.

The two witnesses will have returned to Jerusalem, where they, like their Lord, will be slain by His enemies. It is sad to note that, even with their enemies defeated and their temple worship restored, so many Israelis will have so quickly departed again from God that their "holy city" has become like Sodom and Egypt.

Sodom was the prototype for moral degeneration of this great city, and Egypt was the prototype for its rampant idolatry.

OK...that sorta makes sense. I get too technical sometimes...when I read "which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt..." that implies, to me, in present tense. In other words, this is what it is spiritually known as now--in today's term. I never considered this to be known as this in the future--during the time of the two prophets, but it makes sense in that regard and definition.

But on the "Egypt as a prototype for idolatry". This is true, but also true Egypt was once a shelter and safe haven for the Jews and Jesus at one point. I'm probably just thinking too hard on it.

If you really want a good breakdown of the book of Revelation, I would suggest Chuck Misler, My opinion of course, but this guy has taken books from the bible and broke them down almost verse by verse, and opinion again, is a good authority.
