    Default The shortest prayer.....

    Mat 14:24-33 Mark 6:45-52 John 6:16-21
    22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. 45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. 16 And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
    23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. 46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. 17 And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
    24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. 18 And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
    25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
    26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: 19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.
    27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. 20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
    28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
    29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
    30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
    31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
    32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. 21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
    33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. 52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.
    34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. 53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.

    Peter was doing fine when he followed The Lord's call....until he walked by sight rather than faith.

    He began to sink....how fast does a man walking on water begin to sink?

    a (gravity) = 9.81 m/s2, s = distance traveled, u = initial velocity, t = time elapsed

    s = ut + 1/2 at2

    Assuming big ol' fisherman Pete was 1.8m tall, waist deep would be about 0.9m. Ignoring hydrodynamic resistance, surface tension, flotation and displacement forces, etc. Assuming Pete was not observing nautical safety rules and did not wear his lifejacket or waterwings and that Pete got to waist deep before being caught.

    0.9m = 0*t + 1/2*9.81*t2

    Solved, the time taken by Peter to sink to waist deep from a "standing start" would be t = 0.43 seconds.

    I don't know how fast Pete could say "Lord, save me",....but I do know from the text The Lord was there, immediately stretched out His hand, and saved him. The Lord is fast! And strong...a fisherman like Pete is not light, especially when wet and frightened.

    "Lord, save me" is a prayer I seem to be uttering often nowadays, interspersed with a similar prayer; "Lord, help me".

    To consider The Lord is ever with me, as He promised before He went away, is a great comfort; less than an arm's length away, with a strong arm and unbreakable grip and reflexes like a lion. To know He grabbed Pete in a split second despite knowing there would be a time soon where Pete would thrice swear he knew Him not, is also a comfort.

    He is my Lord and Saviour, and to know He will not cast me away is a comfort and strength. Not that I intend to swear to the heathen that I know Him not......but this is what I do all too often when I fail in my walk, and compromise with the world, the flesh and the devil.

    Grace....the wonder of eternity. Not throwing away the throw-awayable. That's a micah-ism.

    "Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid"

    When He bids you "Come", go to Him, through the storm. Fix your eyes on Him and note that He it is that has power over wind and waves. He could command the storm to stop and it would, instantly. However, He intends to use the storm to teach you something of Him, and of you, and so through it He bids you to come.

    Whenever you're brought to despair in the coming days, when the sight of the billowing waves and roaring winds shakes your faith....call on Him, The Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, He is near, mighty to save."

    "Lord, save me".

    AMEN! I needed to hear that today, Micah.
    Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me? Jeremiah 32:27

    You're most welcome, dear sister. Back in the distant days of a prehistoric highschool I never thought s = ut + 1/2at2 would be such a boon to a flagging spirit, but I'm glad it finally paid off! Next week, we can look at the wonders of v2 = u2 + 2as.

    ;)
