Francis wrote his book "Erasing Hell" as a response to Rob Bell's "Love wins" which distorts what the Bible says about hell and judgment. I have not read it, but I have read his comments on his book in Christianity Today and I did listen to this video. I think Francis is a sincere Christian pastor who is trying to reframe his life in terms of what the Word of God says ... not what man says the Word says. In fact he walked away from a huge megachurch (Cornerstone in Simi Valley) to seek God better in His Word. I do not like the fact of his association with Rob Bell and Mark Driscoll ... but then I do like that he does not agree with them in a lot of their doctrine. As long as he is not preaching bad doctrine then I have nothing to judge. So far, I have not heard anything he has said at which I would point and say "Ichabod!" Certainly what he says in the video above is encouraging to me in that it speaks of a humble heart and indicates a right dividing of the Word on this topic.

Couldn't listen to the Youtube my PC on Dialup isn't able to play it at the moment.
I've tried looking for some internet article on the Book or Author and I didn't get much.
Not sure what this man believes?
Is he for or against there being an place of Everlasting Torment or not?
The Gospel does speak of God loving the world so much that He gave His Son Jesus to die for mankinds sins. That is only part of the gospel. We are aslo told that God did this so that we would not go to Eternal Punishment.
There are many denying the teaching of Hell today but they are denying scripture clearly taught to us in Revelation.
REV 14:9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, 10 he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name." 12 This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God's commandments and remain faithful to Jesus.
What else does Revelation teach us?
REV 22:18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
Hell or Everlasting Torment is very real and it will happen to those who do not repent and recieve Christ's death on the Cross for the payment of their sins. It is a teaching that cannot be denied and it is very much part of the gospel message just as forgiveness of your sins and gaining eternal life or gaining entrance to the Kingdom of Heaven.
We can't pick and chose what we want to believe from God's Word. It is all from God and it is God's Truth. Denying Hell will not make it go away.
MT 7:13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Chan is criticizing those like Bell who deny the reality and the nature of Hell. From what he said in the video and from what you wrote above, you and he would be in agreement, Hannah.

While listening to Chan's message I was struck by his honesty and sincerity. His message is about the struggle that every Christian should be having, putting God's Word into our lives. In fact if a Christian is not having that struggle they aren't a good Christian and don't even know it.
Don't jump at me I'm no conclusion
Francis Chan filled in for a couple Sundays for Britt Merrick during Daisy Love's first bout with cancer. He taught well and touched my heart.
Thanks for posting this KBR!
I can only surmise the Spirit is still breaking up the hard soil in my heart that He started turning over at the men's retreat last weekend. Tears flowed as I listened. I have nothing to add or take away from this message. Our God is So Awesome!
I went back and listened to first time I heard him at Reality Carpinteria on 8/22/10 titled "Fearless".

Consider the words of Omar M. Ahmad, founder of CAIR: "Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant." ... "The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America , and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth."
