Default (shocker, NOT): TBN board diverted millions from ‘charitable assets’

Suit: TBN board diverted millions from ‘charitable assets’ - OC Watchdog : The Orange County Register

The granddaughter of Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Paul and Jan Crouch has accused the world’s largest Christian broadcaster of unlawfully distributing charitable assets worth more than $50 million to the company’s directors.

The charges are leveled in a federal lawsuit filed by Crouch granddaughter Brittany Koper (far left) last week against her former lawyers, who also do legal work for TBN.

“Observers have often wondered how the Crouches can afford multiple mansions on both coasts, a $50 million jet and chauffeurs,” said Tymothy MacLeod, Koper’s attorney. “And finally, with the CFO coming forward, we have answers to those questions.”

Koper had served as chief financial officer, director of finance, corporate treasurer and director of human resources for Trinity Christian Center of Santa Ana, which does business as Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), according to the suit. Koper’s complaint is not directed against her grandparents or TBN — but against the two attorneys who handle some TNB legal work, and who once worked for Koper herself. She accuses them of professional negligence, breach of fiduciary duty and other transgressions in the suit.

Koper was using these attorneys for her personal affairs, and she went to them with her suspicions over the legality of the payments to TBN’s directors, only to be told to shut up, return everything she had earned through TBN to the company, and be gone, according to the suit.

Douglass S. Davert of Davert & Loe in Long Beach is one of the attorneys targeted in Koper’s suit. ”Her assertions are outright fiction and wholly without merit,” he said. ”The allegations are defamatory and to the extent they get printed we are going to defend ourselves vigorously.”

Davert said he couldn’t comment fully on pending litigation, but that there’s a great deal more going on here. To wit:

Koper and her husband were actually the ones doing the misdeeds, according to a suit originally filed by Davert & Loe in Orange County Superior Court in October (the original and amended complaints are here).

Though apparently crafted to avoid mentioning TBN, that suit accused Koper and her husband — both of whom worked for TBN and were on its board of directors — of forging documents and misappropriating funds to the tune of some $400,000. The suit was dismissed without settlement in January.

Koper’s lawyer says that suit was a preemptive strike, an attempt to discredit Koper, because Koper was going to blow the whistle.

Redemption Strategies Inc. — a corporation formed by Loe on Oct. 17 — sued the Koperts on Oct. 18, charging embezzlement, fraud, intentional misrepresentation and other misdeeds. At the time, Davert & Loe were still representing Koper, MacLeod said.

“It’s kind of a sordid affair,” said MacLeod, Koper’s attorney. “Many layers. But at the heart is the wrongful termination. She was terminated for insider whistleblowing.”

MacLeod is getting to be something of an old hand at suing TBN: He represented Brian Dugger, a gay broadcast engineer who sued Trinity in 2009, claiming he was harassed and discriminated against by employees of the world’s largest Christian broadcasting empire. Paul Crouch Jr. allegedly taunted Dugger with pornography, said TBN was no place for fairies and declared that ‘Brian has a man-gina!’ ”

In court paperwork, Crouch said those things never happened. The case was settled in 2010, but its terms were confidential.

We asked TBN to comment directly on these new cases, and will let you know if and when we hear back.

TBN, a nonprofit, reported revenues of $175.6 million, expenses of $193.7 million, and net assets of $827.6 million at the end of 2010, according to its tax returns.

Its highest-paid officer was Paul Crouch, with compensation of $400,000.

Its directors included Paul and Jan Crouch, Paul Crouch Jr., Matthew Crouch, Koper and her husband, among others, according to TBN’s most recent tax returns.

MacLeod said that Koper is readying documentation regarding her charges and will submit a package to the Internal Revenue Service for its review.

We’ll keep you posted on how all this shakes out.

Doesn't surprise me. I know a pastor who worked for them and was shocked by the corruption and outright worldliness that he continually witnessed on the part of the founders.

When I hear stories like this I think of 1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
10 Then fell she Acts 5:1-10 (KJV)

TBN’S PAUL AND JAN CROUCH’S GRANDDAUGHTER SUING FOR UNLAWFUL DISTRIBUTION OF ‘CHARITABLE ASSETS’
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Feb 10, 2012 in Current Issues, Features, Word Faith

By Apprising Ministries special correspondent Chrystal Whitt of Slaughter of the Sheep
This is a repost of an original article on Slaughter of the Sheep

It appears that Paul and Jan Crouch, founders of TV empire Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) need to keep their friends close, and their enemies even closer – especially if that enemy is one of their grandchildren.

An article in the Christian Post reveals that Brittany B. Koper, granddaughter of Paul and Jan Crouch, is suing her former attorneys for “breach of duties, inflicting emotional distress and professional negligence.” Apparently the attorneys advised her to help cover up financial abuse and fraud at TBN.

After Koper took charge of TBN’s finance department, she allegedly discovered illegal financial practices on the part of the company’s directors, but was told to protect the information.

“Following her appointment, Ms. Koper was specifically instructed to falsify public financial disclosures, to falsify government records, and to otherwise cover up conduct of the TBN Companies and their directors that Ms. Koper reasonably believed to be unlawful,” the suit claims.

None of this is surprising, but if the allegations are true, it’s going to be hard for a lot of people to turn a deaf ear to someone as close to the family as a grandchild. Many will still defend them and claim this attack is from the devil, however, it doesn’t sound like Roper set out on this course empty handed. It appears she has some leverage:

Her attorney, MacLeod, also told the OC Register that Koper is preparing a package of documents regarding her charges that she will submit to the Internal Revenue Service for review.

It looks like she took evidence of the fraud with her when she left. Now, this should get very, very interesting.

February 10, 2012 Show - Paul Crouch’s Granddaughter Exposes Corruption at TBN

    Brittany Crouch Koper
Trinity Broadcasting Network’s president and founder Paul Crouch Sr.’s policy of putting family members in positions of power at the largest “Christian” TV network in the world may have come back to bite him. His granddaughter, Brittany Crouch Koper, who served as TBN’s chief financial officer, is accusing TBN “of unlawfully distributing charitable assets worth more than $50 million to the company’s directors.”

Koper filed a federal lawsuit against two TBN lawyers, Douglass S. Davert and David C. Loe, who reportedly instructed her to “shut up” about what she discovered in her position as financial officer. The complaint says that the lawyers intimidated Ms. Koper into returning her own perks which included her house, car, jewelry, life insurance and home furnishings. Failure to do so would result in jail time for her, the attorneys allegedly threatened. According to Koper, a false lawsuit had been filed against her and her husband Michael, also a TBN employee, charging them with misappropriation of funds, in October, 2011, in an attempt to stop her whistle blowing. That case was closed by the plaintiffs after she complied with the demands.

Coincidentally, that same month Koper’s father, Paul Crouch Jr, resigned his position from TBN as Chief of Staff, to “pursue other ministry opportunities.” His hasty retreat baffled many people. Why would he leave TBN as second in command next to hid dad to take a position at a small minority-owned network?

“Observers have often wondered how the Crouches can afford multiple mansions on both coasts, a $50 million jet and chauffeurs,” said Koper’s attorney, Tymothy MacLeod to the Orange County Register who broke the story of Koper’s lawsuit on February 9, 2012. That same day, Paul Crouch Sr. and his younger son Matthew Crouch made veiled threats at anyone who would try to come against TBN.

“There have been a few attempts in the TBN history to upset TBN, to stop TBN,” said Matt Crouch to his father on Behind the Scenes. “You know, there have been a few fools in the 39-year history...and you know what - any attempt at stopping TBN -- they have no idea who they’re actually pushing into the corner. You and mom get pushed in a corner - God help you. That’s a lesson I’ve learned from you, seriously.”

“God help anyone who would try to get in the way of TBN, which was God’s plan,” Paul Crouch responded. “I have attended the funeral of at least two people who tried.”

That threat should be taken seriously when you consider Brittany Koper’s allegations in her complaint that her Uncle Matthew brandished a firearm to threaten her.

Matthew Crouch “began tapping the firearm he had brought to the meeting and asked Ms. Koper what she thought would happen when she wrote a memo to the board critical of Matthew Crouch’s financial improprieties. Matthew Crouch continued tapping the gun he was holding to ensure that Ms. Koper recognized the lethal threat being made.”

Several years ago, someone who was suing TBN for plagiarism told this reporter that after filing suit against them, her brake lines were cut on her car and she was being tailed wherever she went. If these allegations are true, then TBN cannot point the finger at God for their protection. They seem to be taking matters into their own hands.

    Lewdness at TBN

Another strange twist to this story is the accusation that defendant David Loe sexually harassed Koper on more than one occasion when she was working with him. The complaint says,

“Defendant Loe touched Ms. Koper in an overtly sexual manner repeatedly, told Ms. Koper that he was sexually aroused, made lewd and derogatory comments about engaging in sexual acts with Ms. Koper, and offered illegal drugs to Ms. Koper, who was defendant Loe’s client in that matter and others. In a business meeting, Mr. Loe made repeated remarks about Ms. Koper’s breast enhancement surgery, reached across the table in front of witnesses, and grabbed Ms. Koper’s breasts to (as Mr. Loe put it) ‘see if they feel real.’ After Ms. Koper repeatedly refused defendant Loe’s sexual advances, defendant Loe became cruel, vindictive, and malicious toward Ms. Koper.”

The Register reported “ that Koper is readying documentation regarding her charges and will submit a package to the Internal Revenue Service for its review.” Time will tell if Koper will follow up on this brave act or succumb to the intimidation that, she says in her complaint, has made her physically ill with “loss of appetite, physical weakness, nausea, headaches, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, stomach and digestive problems, malnutrition, hair loss, severe insomnia, and suicidal thoughts requiring counseling and medication.”

This is not the first time TBN has been rocked with scandal. In 2004, Paul Crouch Sr. settled out of court, paying out nearly half a million dollars, to keep another former employee quiet regarding an alleged 1996 homosexual fling between the two of them.

The Koper case has the potential of bringing even more disgrace, not only to TBN, but to the name of Christianity in the eyes of the onlooking world. It makes the PTL scandal look like a Sunday School picnic.

Brittany Koper could not be reached for comment and the defendants did not return messages left at their law offices.

TBN network says: ‘God help anyone who would …get in the way of TBN’

We told you last week that the granddaughter of Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Paul and Jan Crouch has accused the world’s largest Christian broadcaster of unlawfully distributing charitable assets worth more than $50 million to the company’s directors.

The charges were leveled in a federal lawsuit filed by Crouch granddaughter Brittany Koper (far left) against her former lawyers, who also do legal work for Trinity. One of those lawyers said her charges were “outright fiction and wholly without merit.”

On Thursday, Feb. 9 — the same day that our story ran online — Paul Crouch and his son, Matt, were having a live chat on TBN’s “Behind the Scenes.” Paul was reminiscing about how TBN began back in 1973 — God spoke to him as he was driving on MacArthur Boulevard — and the conversation took a turn that Koper’s attorney finds somewhat menacing.

“You know what’s funny Dad?” Matt said (at minute 8:38 on the video).

“There have been a few attempts in the TBN history to upset TBN, to stop TBN, to — there have been a few fools in the 38, 39 year history, coming up on 40 years, and you know what, any attempt at stopping TBN — they have no idea who they’re actually pushing into the corner.

You and Mom get pushed in a corner, God help you. That’s a lesson I’ve learned from you, seriously.”

Paul Crouch responded: “God help anyone who would try to get in the way of TBN, which was God’s plan. … I have attended the funerals of at least two people who tried….

“Boy, anyone that’s ever tried to get in the way of this network – don’t. Don’t try it. Don’t try it, I’m telling you. You’re playing with fire. God says ‘I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.’

And TBN, you know what, just plain old TBN as a great network entity is proof of the sovereignty of God and the power of God against hell and high water. This network stands as a monument to the faithfulness of God. He did it.

Jan and I were just simple little kids — we didn’t even know what we were doing. It was God’s idea. He did it all.”

Crouch then appealed for donations. “Anyone have a need?” he asked. “Plant a seed. Get to the phone.”

The comments were directed at no one in particular, but they resounded with Koper.

Trinity Christian Center, which does business as TBN, is a nonprofit in the eyes of Uncle Sam, which means it doesn’t pay taxes on its income.

It reported revenues of $175.6 million, expenses of $193.7 million, and net assets of $827.6 million at the end of 2010, according to its tax returns. Its highest-paid officer was Paul Crouch, with compensation of $400,000.

Koper’s attorney, Tymothy MacLeod, said that Koper is readying documentation regarding her charges and will submit a package to the Internal Revenue Service for its review.

In her suit, Koper says that she had been threatened by Trinity officials.

“After and as a result of reporting and objecting to her employers’ unlawful conduct, Ms. Koper was terminated by the TBN Companies,” the suit says.

“In retaliation, the TBN Companies also terminated Ms. Koper’s husband, Michael Koper, who was Trinity Broadcasting’s Corporate Secretary and Vice President of Media Services.

“When questioned about the grounds for termination, Matthew Crouch, a director at Trinity Broadcasting, began tapping the firearm he had brought to the meeting and asked Ms. Koper what she thought would happen when she wrote a memo to the board critical of Matthew Crouch’s financial improprieties.

Matthew Crouch continued tapping the gun he was holding to ensure that Ms. Koper recognized the lethal threat being made.”

    The Problem with Not Questioning
Posted on February 21, 2012 by Chrystal Whitt
Common sense takes people a long way. Some folks say you either have it or you don’t. Some will say that if you walk in the spirit, you don’t need common sense. I’ve heard charismatic leaders say, “Don’t question this!” or “Don’t try to figure this stuff out… just go with it!”

Trinity Broadcasting Network is probably the biggest “christian” broadcasting channel on the planet. The money that goes through there is more money than we little folks will ever see in our entire life time.

The network spans the globe; the owners own mansions, leisure jets, and stay in penthouse suites. They drive cars with a price tag that would be enough to buy a house for normal, hard working people.

    But, let’s not question it.

A glitter-dipped minister looks at the tv screen and tells you that if you’ll send in your last dime, God will heal you. So, a lonely widow who has been diagnosed with cancer, who is feeling desperate, who is feeling forsaken sees that smiling face and she feels hope.

He would never lie to her, he’s a man of God. She gets what last few dollars she has and she sends it to him. Two weeks later she dies; but, he takes her money and goes back to his ivory castle.

But, don’t you dare question it.

A cracked out prostitute lays in the ghetto and trembles as her body is wracked in pain. She hates the drug she’s addicted to but she must have it. Her body needs it, or so she thinks. It’s the only thing that will stop the physical pain. It’s the only thing that will numb the emotional pain, if only temporarily. The memories of sexual abuse come, but they don’t hurt as bad if she can’t feel. The more she uses the more it eats her alive… but the memories keep coming, and the pain won’t stay away.

The burning cycle she is on kills her more and more every time. She checks into a seedy hotel and curls up on the bed. She turns on the television just for a little noise and sees that nickel slick preacher staring back at her. “God wants to prosper you. All you need to do is to take out your check book and sow into that to reap a financial harvest.

God has promised he will prosper you.” She stares at the screen and the pain goes deeper. She has very little money. How could she possibly afford a blessing from God? Despair wells up until she feels nothing but hate. “Where was God when ______ was sneaking into my bed every night?” Where was His love then?” She looks at the screen and hears that God wants to prosper her… but there are no answers to the questions that really haunt her. Instead of the gospel, which is the power of God unto salvation, she hears a message about prosperity, which only has the power to make this preacher richer. Deciding to take a chance that maybe God will help her, she finds her last five dollars and sends it in.

Two weeks later she dies of a drug overdose, but this man’s coffers just got fatter. But, let’s not question it.

A heartbroken father holds his toddler in his arms. Three weeks prior, his child fell into the family pool and drowned. The medics were able to get a heartbeat, but the brain damage was too extensive. The doctors have given up hope – there’s nothing else they can do. In desperation, he checks his child out of the hospital and goes to a healing crusade. He sits there, rocking his child and begging God for a miracle. This preacher can heal him.

He’s done it so many times before. He has donated to this man’s ministry for years – surely there’s a miracle for him. The preacher with the million dollar smile and $2,000 suit comes to the platform and speaks of all the marvelous things God has done through him – and this will happen to you too, but only if you sow into what the spirit is doing.

The desperate father watches as the money buckets come out – he watches as people donate – he watches as the money overflows – and he watches as the preacher leaves the stage. He looks down into his child’s face.

The million-dollar preacher walks away even richer – the father walks away and buries his child five days later. But, no…don’t question it.

If God had never sent us His Word, if He had never taught us the way of righteousness, even common sense would demand outrage at this.

Even as sinful and depraved human beings, we look at that and see the perverseness of it all!

It should sicken us that these men (and even women) preach this abominable doctrine, and scam people in such a sleezy way, and they do it all in the name of God. Common sense and common sense alone tells us this. Or at least it should. Many don’t reason it out. Many don’t want to.

They believe these lies no matter how perverse it is.

But, don’t question it. Don’t you dare.

Suit: ‘Cover-ups of sexual and criminal scandals’ at TBN
February 23rd, 2012, 9:36 pm · · posted by Teri Sforza, Register staff writer

Jaw-dropping details about alleged financial digressions at Trinity Broadcasting Network were made in a lawsuit filed Thursday –

    including the purchase of a $50 million jet through “a sham loan to an alter ego corporation” for the personal use of the Crouches; a $100,000 motor home purchased by Trinity as a mobile residence for Jan Crouch’s dogs;

“multiple residential estates” falsely reported as guest homes or church parsonages to avoid income disclosures; meal expenses of up to a half-million dollars per company director; “personal chauffeurs compensated with Trinity funds under the guise of medical payments;” and “multiple cover-ups of sexual and criminal scandals.”

The suit was filed in Orange County Superior Court by Joseph McVeigh against Trinity Christian Center of Santa Ana (which does business as Trinity Broadcasting Network, the largest Christian broadcaster in the world), its International Christian Broadcasting arm, attorneys Davert & Loe (who do legal work for Trinity) and others.

McVeigh accuses Trinity and its lawyers of malicious prosecution in connection with a loan he received through Trinity companies.

So who is McVeigh? He is the uncle, by marriage, of Crouch granddaughter Brittany Koper — who sued Davert & Loe in federal court last month. Koper accused the world’s largest Christian broadcaster of unlawfully distributing charitable assets worth more than $50 million to its principals — and of firing her as its finance director, and beginning a campaign of “malicious retaliation” against her and her family (including McVeigh), for refusing to go along with the scheme.

Trinity paints a very different picture — saying it was Koper and her husband who committed financial misdeeds at Trinity.

    ‘ABSURD AND CONTRIVED’

While Trinity has not been served “with this absurd and contrived suit, it is nothing more than a tabloid pleading,” said Trinity attorney Colby M. May in an email. “No matter how hard Ms. Koper and her husband try to divert attention from their embezzlement and misappropriation of money, it won’t work (regardless of how many Uncle McVeighs they marshal). As I previously reported to you in the context of Ms. Koper’s suit against Davert & Loe (of which neither TBN and ICB are not parties), the outrageous, false, and unsubstantiated assertions about TBN and ICB, which are embellished in Mr. McVeigh’s suit, are untrue. The claims are nevertheless being echo-chambered in the continuing vain attempt at diversion.

“I simply remind you of the following: (1) Ms. Koper has admitted several times to having embezzled and misappropriated money; (2) the IRS was months ago informed of Ms. & Mr. Koper’s conduct, and they face considerable fines and excise by the IRS; (3) in recognition and admission of their misconduct and dishonest acts, Ms. & Mr. Koper have made partial restitution, but that stopped when they fled to New York, and (4) at no time have any charitable assets of the Trinity Christian Center of Santa Ana Inc. or International Christian Broadcasters been ‘diverted’ to any director, period (except, of course, whatever Mr. & Ms. Koper diverted and embezzled).”

    SALACIOUS DETAILS

McVeigh’s suit says that Koper was promoted to finance director because Trinity wanted somebody within the family who would keep its “financial ‘skeletons’ safely in the ‘closet.’”

The suit then delves into much more detail regarding the “unlawful and unreported income distributions to Trinity Broadcasting’s directors” than Koper’s suit does, including:

    “Multiple jet aircraft, including a $50 million ’Global Express‘ luxury jet aircraft purchased for the personal use of the Crouches through a sham loan to an alter ego corporation set up by the directors of Trinity Broadcasting in Florida, as well as an $8 million Hawker jet aircraft purchased by Trinity Broadcasting for the personal use of director Janice Crouch;
    “Multiple motor vehicles, including a $100,000 motor home purchased by Trinity Broadcasting as a mobile residence for director Janice Crouch’s dogs; the latest Bentley recently purchased by Trinity Broadcasting for director Paul Crouch, Sr.; the most recent Denali purchased by Trinity Broadcasting for director Janice Crouch; a new Suburban recently purchased by Trinity Broadcasting for director Matthew Crouch; and numerous other vehicles;
“Multiple residential estates falsely reported as ‘guest homes’ or ‘church parsonages’ to avoid income disclosures, even though they are maintained by Trinity Broadcasting for Paul Crouch, Sr.’s personal use in Newport Beach, California; another mansion purchased by Trinity Broadcasting for the personal use of Paul and Janice Crouch in Nashville, Tennessee; residential property purchased by Trinity Broadcasting Florida for the personal use of Paul and Janice Crouch in Miami, Florida; residential property purchased by Trinity Broadcasting for the personal use of Paul and Janice Crouch in Irving, Texas; two homes purchased by Trinity Broadcasting for the personal use of Matthew Crouch in Irving, Texas, although one of the homes is used by his sons; three more homes purchased by Trinity Broadcasting for Matthew Crouch’s personal use in Costa Mesa, California (adjacent residential properties occupied by Matthew Crouch, his wife, and his two sons); a cabin in Lake Arrowhead, California purchased by Trinity Broadcasting and reserved solely for the personal use of Trinity Broadcasting board members; another mansion purchased by Trinity Broadcasting San Marcos for Janice Crouch’s personal use in Newport Beach, California; and two more mansions next door to one anothcr that were purchased by Trinity Broadcasting Florida for the personal use of Paul Crouch, Sr. and Janice Crouch in Windermere, Florida.
    “Multiple other perquisites, including meal expenses on the order of $300,000 to $500,000 per year for each director of Trinity Broadcasting; hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional credit card reimbursements for each director; personal chauffeurs compensated with Trinity Broadcasting funds under the guise of “medical payments”; fictitious ‘rent’ (and expenses) and other ‘donations’ paid to Paul and Janice Crouch for the fictitious use of a home owned by those directors in Newport Beach, California (even though the residence sits empty); and tens of thousands of dollars in ’redecorating’ expenses paid each year for such items as stain removal in the Crouch mansions;
“Multiple backchannel distributions, kickbacks, and related schemes, such as tens of millions of dollars distributed through a company owned by TBN director Matthew Crouch, called Gener8xion Entertainment; a revocable trust account scheme by which Trinity Broadcasting’s directors were paid returns above market rate on invested funds, with Trinity Broadcasting paying the difference as undisclosed distributions to the directors; fraudulent accounting schemes by which Trinity Broadcasting luxury assets (such as the $50 million jet aircraft used by Paul Crouch Sr.) are falsely held on the books of other corporations controlled by Trinity Broadcasting’s same directors; falsely reporting income received and controlled by Trinity Broadcasting as income purportedly received and controlled by third-party corporations to avoid financial disclosures and adverse tax consequences; routine assignment of sham ‘business purposes’ to the use of Trinity Broadcasting’s luxury assets (such as frequent vacations around the world on corporate jets); and fraudulent donation and kickback schemes involving third party ‘ministries’ and entities owned or controlled through Trinity Broadcasting’s directors; and
“Multiple cover-ups of sexual and criminal scandals, including the cover-up and destruction of evidence concerning a bloody sexual assault involving Trinity Broadcasting and affiliated Holy Land Experience employees; the cover-up of director Janice Crouch’s affair with a staff member at the Holy Land Experience; the cover-up of director Paul Crouch’s use of Trinity Broadcasting funds to pay for a legal settlement with Enoch Lonnie Ford (a former TBN employee who said he had a homosexual affair with Paul Crouch); the cover-up following director Matthew Crouch’s exposure of his genitals to cleaning staff on multiple occasions; under-the-table payments to avoid liability and punitive damages in the ongoing David Rhodes wrongful death suit, including payments funneled through All American TV, Inc., a nonprofit corporation controlled by Trinity Broadcasting’s general counsel, John Casoria; falsification of records transmitted to the South Coast Air Quality Management District in California; and the list continues.
(Note: The bolding of names and numbers is our style here on Watchdog, and is not in the suit itself.)

Trinity Christian Center is a nonprofit in the eyes of Uncle Sam, which means it doesn’t pay taxes on its income. It reported revenue of $175.6 million, expenses of $193.7 million, and net assets of $827.6 million at the end of 2010, according to its tax returns. Its highest-paid officer was Paul Crouch, with compensation of $400,000.

Koper (right), the Crouch granddaughter, has filed reports regarding all this with the Orange County District Attorney’s office, the police, and the California State Bar detailing her accusations, her attorney, Tymothy MacLeod, has said. She is submitting a report to the Internal Revenue Service as well.

This is not the last of it, either.

“This is the second of four lawsuits that we have now been retained to file by individuals who continue to come forward in connection with the alleged public policy violations at TBN,” MacLeod told us by email. “There is much more to be said on these important issues, and we look forward to getting each of these cases on file on behalf of our clients.”

    We’ll keep you posted.

Greed, Immorality, And Cover-Ups Listed In Lawsuit Against TBN and the Crouchs

It appears the dirty deeds of TBN and its god, Money, is being revealed.

The Crouches and TBN are being outted by their granddaughter and her husband, and as typical of the Crouches, in turn being threated with the hand of God against them.

Guess what? God's hand is actually against TBN and the Crouches. They blaspheme God and His name, are full of greed, and teach damnable doctrine.

Their fear tactics are powerless and frankly, tiresome.

1Ti 6:3 If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound

controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive
language, evil suspicions,5 and constant friction between men of depraved mind and
deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

You may think I’m being hyperdramatic, but I’m not.

Click on this video link, forward to 8:38 into the video, and listen for yourself. Paul Crouch says he has attended the funerals of two people who came against TBN. Crouch stated this on the same day as news of his granddaughter’s lawsuit broke online. Who could he possibly have been directing this at?

If Crouch is not loyal to his own grandchild, how in the world can he and his son, Matthew, possibly be loyal to their donors and most steadfast followers?

I think it’s high time people wake up and do what they can to stand in the way of TBN by denying them the thing they want the most - money.

Lawsuits bring scrutiny to Trinity Broadcasting

    By Gillian Flaccus
    Associated Press / March 22, 2012

COSTA MESA, Calif.—Televangelists Paul and Jan Crouch have faced plenty of mountains building their religious broadcast empire -- among them allegations of a homosexual tryst and a prolonged battle with the Federal Communications Commission -- but the most recent attack on the founders of Trinity Broadcasting Network comes from their own flesh and blood.

Their granddaughter, Brittany Koper, recently filed court papers that include allegations of $50 million in financial shenanigans at the world's largest Christian broadcasting network. Her suit was followed by another from a Koper in-law, who detailed opulent spending at the network on items such as private jets, mansions in California, Tennessee and Florida and a $100,000 mobile home for Jan Crouch's dogs.

The lawsuits came after Koper's husband was accused by a debt collection company of embezzling more than $1 million from TBN. The debt collection company that filed the lawsuit later added the Crouches' granddaughter and two of her in-laws as defendants.

The outbreak of legal skirmish offers a rare window into the secretive world of the sprawling religious non-profit and exposes a family feud that could draw more outside scrutiny of TBN. Attorneys from both sides say they have contacted police and the Internal Revenue Service.

The Crouches founded TBN in 1973 and grew it into an international Christian empire that beams prosperity gospel programming -- which promises that if the faithful sacrifice for their belief, God will reward them with material wealth -- to every continent but Antarctica 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It has 78 satellites and more than 18,000 television and cable affiliates and owns seven other networks, as well as its headquarters in Costa Mesa in Orange County, an estate outside Nashville called Trinity Music City, USA and the Holy Land Experience, a Christian amusement park in Orlando.

On any given day -- or night -- viewers from the United States to India can watch Christian-inspired news updates, documentaries, movies, talk shows and sermons by preachers such as Benny Hinn, T.D. Jakes and Dr. Creflo Dollar without leaving their armchairs.

The lawsuit attention comes at a bad time for TBN, which has seen viewer donations drop steeply. TBN raked in $92 million in donations in 2010 and cleared $175 million in tax-free revenue, but its net income plummeted from nearly $60 million in 2006 to a loss of $18 million in 2010, the most recent year available. Donations fell by nearly $30 million in the same period -- a hit the network blames on the bad economy.

At the same time, Koper's father -- the eldest Crouch son -- resigned abruptly as vice president and chief-of-staff late last year. The unexplained departure of Paul Crouch Jr. roughly coincided with his daughter's legal battle and came just months after he launched iTBN, a project to expand the network's online and mobile reach.

TBN Responds to Articles, Allegations Concerning Network Finances
    Contact: Colby May, 202-544-5171, cmmay@maylawoffices.com

LOS ANGELES, March 27, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- Trinity Broadcasting Network has responded to a recent round of news articles detailing accusations by former employees that TBN's officers participated in financial misappropriation and extravagant living at the expense of the network's donors. TBN attorney and spokesman Colby May said it was unfortunate that the media had relied on discredited sources for most of the information they used in their coverage.

"The soundness and veracity of these stories are completely undermined when you realize that they depend almost exclusively upon accusations from individuals who admitted they had embezzled and misappropriated over $1 million from the network, and its companion ministry, International Christian Broadcasting," May explained. "And the most heartbreaking fact is that the wife of one of the central figures in that misappropriation is the granddaughter of TBN's founders, Paul and Jan Crouch."

May was referring to Brittany Koper, who for a short time served as the head of TBN's Finance Department, until she and husband Michael Koper, who had been in charge of TBN's airtime sales, were fired after their embezzlement and financial misappropriation were discovered. Complicit in the couple's activity was Michael's uncle, Joseph McVeigh, who received at least $65,000 in International Christian Broadcasting funds under the guise of a "loan," May explained.

"What the bulk of media stories don't explain is that these individuals used lawsuits to contrive absurd allegations that trusted TBN officials had illegally funneled millions of dollars for their own use," said May. "Add to that the fabrications that Dr. and Mrs. Crouch were using ministry funds to buy jewelry, jets, mansions, and mobile homes for dogs, and you have all the ammunition for a stereotypical attack against an esteemed media ministry."

May explained that the truth left out of the news stories is far different, and reveals a nearly 40-year track record of sound financial and personal integrity by TBN and its founders. "Since 1973 Dr. and Mrs. Crouch have taken to heart the trust and confidence countless thousands of supporters have placed in this broadcast ministry," he said. May noted that as with all responsible institutions, TBN is subject to both internal and external audits every year, and is regularly monitored by appropriate governmental agencies. "In fact," he recalled, "when these financial misdeeds came to light, TBN officials immediately reported them to the proper authorities."

From day one, May emphasized, financial integrity has been at the core of TBN's relationships with its partners. "That is why, today, TBN stands as the third largest broadcast group in the nation, sending out wholesome faith-and-family programming 24 hours every day around the globe," he said. "And that sound financial management, along with a commitment to operate debt free, helps assure that hundreds of millions of TBN viewers worldwide will continue to receive TBN's life-changing programming for many years to come."

Family Battle Offers Look Inside Lavish TV Ministry Brian Blanco for The New York Times
The Holy Land Experience theme park in Orlando, Fla., is part of the Trinity Broadcasting Network’s operations.

    By ERIK ECKHOLM
    Published: May 4, 2012

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — For 39 years, the Trinity Broadcasting Network has urged viewers to give generously and reap the Lord’s bounty in return.

The prosperity gospel preached by Paul and Janice Crouch, who built a single station into the world’s largest Christian television network, has worked out well for them.

Mr. and Mrs. Crouch have his-and-her mansions one street apart in a gated community here, provided by the network using viewer donations and tax-free earnings. But Mrs. Crouch, 74, rarely sleeps in the $5.6 million house with tennis court and pool. She mostly lives in a large company house near Orlando, Fla., where she runs a side business, the Holy Land Experience theme park. Mr. Crouch, 78, has an adjacent home there too, but rarely visits. Its occupant is often a security guard who doubles as Mrs. Crouch’s chauffeur.

The twin sets of luxury homes only hint at the high living enjoyed by the Crouches, inspirational television personalities whose multitudes of stations and satellite signals reach millions of worshipers across the globe. Almost since they started in the 1970s, the couple have been criticized for secrecy about their use of donations, which totaled $93 million in 2010.

Now, after an upheaval with Shakespearean echoes, one son in this first family of televangelism has ousted the other to become the heir apparent. A granddaughter, who was in charge of TBN’s finances, has gone public with the most detailed allegations of financial improprieties yet, which TBN has denied, saying its practices were audited and legal.

The granddaughter, Brittany Koper, and her husband have been fired by the network, which accused them of stealing $1.3 million to buy real estate and cars and make family loans. “They’re just trying to divert attention from their own crimes,” said Colby May, a lawyer representing TBN. Janice and Paul Crouch declined requests for interviews.

In two pending lawsuits and in her first public interview, Ms. Koper described company-paid luxuries that she said appeared to violate the Internal Revenue Service’s ban on “excess compensation” by nonprofit organizations as well as possibly state and federal laws on false bookkeeping and self-dealing.

The lavish perquisites, corroborated by two other former TBN employees, include additional, often-vacant homes in Texas and on the former Conway Twitty estate in Tennessee, corporate jets valued at $8 million and $49 million each and thousand-dollar dinners with fine wines, paid with tax-exempt money.

In the lawsuits and interviews, Ms. Koper, 26, also charges that TBN has spent millions of dollars in sweetheart deals with a commercial film company owned until recently by a son of the Crouches, Matthew, including poorly monitored investments made after he joined the TBN board in 2007.

“My job as finance director was to find ways to label extravagant personal spending as ministry expenses,” Ms. Koper said. This is one way, she said, the company avoids probing questions from the I.R.S. She said that the absence of outsiders on TBN’s governing board — currently consisting of Paul, Janice and Matthew Crouch — had led to a serious lack of accountability for spending.

Ms. Koper and the two other former TBN employees also said that dozens of staff members, including Ms. Koper, chauffeurs, sound engineers and others had been ordained as ministers by TBN. This allowed the network to avoid paying Social Security taxes on their salaries and made it easier to justify providing family members with rent-free houses, sometimes called “parsonages,” she said.

The company did not always succeed. Last year, officials in Orange County, Fla., turned down TBN’s application to register the adjacent lakefront houses in Windermere as parsonages, saying they served no religious purpose, The Orlando Sentinel reported. The designation would have resulted in religious exemptions and saved TBN roughly $50,000 in taxes a year.

Ms. Koper said that the company run by Matthew Crouch, 50, who is her uncle, had received an estimated $50 million in TBN money over the years, with little oversight, to finance religious film projects and television shows. TBN recouped only a small fraction of its loans and investments, sometimes forgiving large sums in return for broadcast rights of limited value, she said.

She also questioned the justification for providing rent-free houses for Matthew, now a TBN vice president, and his wife, Laurie, and separate houses for their young-adult sons in Costa Mesa, Calif., including one that Ms. Koper said was remodeled at company expense with wall-mounted Transformer robot figures costing several thousand dollars, a putting green and an indoor basketball court.

Ms. Koper and her husband, Michael Koper, 28, who formerly managed sales of TBN airtime, said they were fired last September after writing memorandums to the elder Mr. Crouch about questionable spending. They showed a reporter for The New York Times what they said were copies of the memos.

“People have been conned by my grandparents,” Ms. Koper said.

    quote:

The Crouch family dynasty's opulent and foul worldliness is getting the attention it deserves. And guess what, Christians, all of us are seen by the world as endorsers of their scam because our leaders did nothing and even shared the red velvet/gold trim brothel-looking sets with them.

Thanks a lot Greg Laurie and Kirk Cameron
