In Their Own Words: A Survey of Northwest Omaha Religious Leaders | Metro Neighborhood News | Omaha, NE
Rev. Barry L. Vennard, Senior Minister at Unity of Omaha, 3424 N. 90th Street
MNN: How do you religiously or spiritually identify yourself?
Vennard: As a Unity Minister, I serve as the Spiritual Leader of Unity of Omaha whose mission is to support as many people as possible in discovering and living their spiritual purpose and potential. We attempt to support people on a positive path for spiritual living. Honoring the truth that there are many paths to God we provide teachings that help people live meaningful and full lives. Unity sees itself as inclusive and open minded and teaches a holistic, intuitive and spiritual approach to living.
MNN: Why do you identify yourself this way?
Vennard: We believe our spiritual approach to Christianity, which emphasizes Jesus' teachings of a universal spirituality that transcends religion and that calls human beings to expand their capacity for love and forgiveness and to extend their circles of compassion to include all people and ultimately all of creation, is what is needed today.
MNN: What is one stereotype or myth that is out there about your religious or spiritual identity that affects you?
Vennard: We often get confused with Unitarianism.
MNN: Do you find Omaha a welcoming place for you to follow your spiritual or religious path?
Vennard: Yes. Omaha is a great city.
MNN: Is there anything else you want people to know about you or your religion or belief system?
Vennard: We teach that the Divine Presence of God is the essence of every human being and that becoming consciously aware of that opens human beings to a deep and personal experience of divine life and love and expands one's capacity to create good in life.
