TULSA, Oklahoma -- Former Tulsa Golden Hurricane linebacker George Clinkscale died Wednesday night after participating in an unsanctioned amateur boxing match held at Guts Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The fights are targeted to young adults 18 - 30 years old, and promoted online as part of their "Sub 30" ministry.

GUTS held Wednesday's match in the parking lot and promoted it with billboards, but it passed under the radar of the state authorities who oversee amateur boxing.

Now they're looking into the death of Clinkscale, who within minutes of his match was critically ill and died shortly after arriving at St. Francis Hospital.

According to a press release sent out by Guts Church, Clinkscale began cramping during his fight and asked EMSA personnel that were on site for IV hydration.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of George Clinkscale," the press release said. "We join George's many friends in mourning his passing. Our hearts and prayers are with his family and friends.

This was the sixth time that Guts Church had held a boxing event, billed on their website as "Guts Fight Night VI." According to a tweet sent out by Guts Church pastor Bill Scheer, there were 12 fights set to take place during the event.

In order for an amateur boxing event to be held in the state of Oklahoma it must be sanctioned by USA Boxing, the governing body approved by the State Athletic Commission in 1999. USA Boxing is the only sanctioning body authorized to sanction amateur events in the state of Oklahoma.

Joe Miller of the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission said that after making contact with president of the Local Boxing Committee of USA Boxing Jack McCann, he was informed that the committee was unaware that the event was taking place.

"It was billed as being an amateur event. [McCann] said they had no knowledge of that event and have never had knowledge of it," Miller said. "By virtue of that, this has been billed as an illegal event, which I've had to take action against by law."

The commission is now working with the Attorney General's office to gather information and how to proceed.

"This is a serious problem in the state of Oklahoma," Miller said. "Inherently boxing is a dangerous sport. Injuries can occur. Deaths can occur, but that's what the commission is for, to minimize that."

In his four seasons at TU, Clinkscale was a two-year starter, with 98 career tackles – including 58 in his final season suiting up for the Golden Hurricane. He was one of just five freshmen to earn a letter in his freshman season, playing in 12 games, finishing with 12 total tackles. He missed the majority of the 2006 season due to an injury.

Tulsa head coach Bill Blankenship released a statement Thursday about Clinkscale's death.

"George was much too young to be taken from us. He was an extremely passionate and bright young man who will be greatly missed and long remembered by his teammates and coaches. The thing I was most excited about in George's life right now was how tremendously excited he was to be a father. He was passionate about working as a football coach and how much he could make a difference with those young men. It's a tragic loss for all of us."

The medical examiner will determine the cause of Clinkscale's death. The athletic commission says the Attorney General's office will handle the state investigation of the boxing match and determine whether the church that promoted it should face prosecution.

GUTS CHURCH MAY BE KNOCKED OUT OF THE RING
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Sep 23, 2011 in Current Issues, Features

The online apologetics and discernment work Apprising Ministries continues proclaiming to you plainly that the mainstream of the evangelical community is sinking into what seems to be a New Downgrade No-Controversy.

Frankly, it almost appears to me that sometimes I’m documenting the great falling way; but this much is certain [pause to let postmoderns wince], we are—at the very least—in the midst of a great falling away.

With this in mind then, I introduce you to another Seeker Driven establishment called GUTS Church (GC) in Tulsa, OK. GC happens to be headed up by pastor Bill and pastrix Sandy Scheer so you already know that it’s in open rebellion against God:

    (Online source)

One of the programs at GC is something called Sub30:

    (Online source)

And one of the ways GC has gone about “targeting college students” is Fight Night:

In fact, just yesterday Sub30Tulsa tweeted:

Now News on 6 Tulsa is reporting that Former TU Linebacker Dies After Unsanctioned Boxing Event At Tulsa Church:

    News On 6 tells us:

Another reason this centered on the self (cf. 2 Timothy 3:2) Church Growth Movement is so dangerous.

    Not Your Grandma’s Church!
Posted on September 22, 2011 by Coram Deo

    Sunday! Sunday!! Sunday!!!

We’ll sell you the whole seat, but you’ll only need the EDGE!!!

We bring the Word of God with a holy punch right in your kisser at GUTS CHURCH TULSA!!! It’s NOT your grandma’s church!!! Booo-yaaahhh!!!

Okay, so I made up the intro.

But I don’t think my imaginary promo is too far from reality.

“GUTS Church” in Tulsa, OK has made the news several times with their over-the-top shenanigans,

but sadly they made the news today because a former TU linebacker George Clinkscale died after participating in an illegal, unsanctioned boxing match sponsored by this organization masquerading as a church.

This is not GUTS’ first appearance on DefCon, in fact the Pilgrim posted a piece about them a few years ago entitled “Hip Hopera” the church Christmas play.

“Hip Hopera” the church Christmas play. | Defending. Contending.

They’ve also managed to make at least two appearances at The Museum of Idolatry for their “You University” sermon series which was also covered on the Fighting for the Faith radio program, and their Nightmare Haunted House “outreach”.

Perhaps jail time stemming from their illegal boxing match, thereby possibly contributing to the death of George Clinkscale, will do GUTS church leadership some good.

Oh yeah, and “pastor” Bill Scheer and his “pastrix” wife Sandy are Pentasmatic word of faith prosperity pimps. What were the odds of that in connection with everything else wrong with this “church”? Go figure.

Family sues Tulsa church over death following boxing match

The family of a former University of Tulsa football player who died following an unsanctioned boxing match at a local church filed a suit Friday in Tulsa County against the church for damages.

The suit alleges gross negligence by Guts Church for promoting and organizing a boxing match that was not licensed and in violation of state and federal regulations.

George Clinkscale III, a former TU linebacker and father, died following a boxing match at Guts Church's Fight Night VI, held in the church's parking lot Sept. 21.

Clinkscale, who was 24 and from Cedar Hill, Texas, reportedly began cramping during his match and later died at a hospital.

The state Medical Examiner's Office did not have a preliminary report of the cause of death when contacted by the Tulsa World on Wednesday.

In the lawsuit, members of Clinkscale's family, including his father, mother, fiancee and two children, were listed as plaintiffs and asked for an unspecified amount of damages in excess of $75,000 and punitive or exemplary damages.

The suit lists defendants, William and Sandra Scheer, as directors of Guts Church Inc., and holds them accountable for Clinkscale's death.

A spokesperson for Guts Church could not be reached for comment Friday night.

According to the suit, the defendants should have known that the boxing matches, called "illegal and extremely dangerous underground boxing operations," were in violation of state law.

"As a direct result of the ... conduct of the defendants ... George L. Clinkscale III, prior to his death, endured pain, suffering and mental anguish which was directly caused by the injuries he suffered in the fight and his ultimate death," according to allegations in the lawsuit.

The suit further alleges the defendants used fighters somewhat known in the area such as University of Tulsa football players to promote the event.

According to advertisements published by Guts Church, the event also promoted a bout between a Tulsa police officer and a Tulsa fire fighter.

Clinkscale reportedly fought in the main bout against a former Oklahoma State football player.

Tulsa Police began an investigation into Clinkscale's death Oct. 10, Officer Jason Willingham said.

The investigation is being conducted by the department's homicide division, although not because they are considering it a homicide, Willingham said.

Any criminal investigation involving a death will involve the homicide division, he said.

Officials with the state boxing commission conducted an investigation following the event, which they called illegal.

However, boxing commission officials also said there may be a loophole in the law that doesn't directly address penalties against unsanctioned boxing matches - only sanctioned matches.

A civil suit would not fall into any possible legal loopholes, but they may factor into a judgment if the lawsuit proceeds to court.

William Scheer, interviewed the morning after the fight on Sept. 22, said the boxers were all wearing headgear and 16-ounce gloves during the matches, which were three one-minute rounds.

Sixteen-ounce gloves are larger - and thus more padded - than the standard 10-ounce size worn by amateur boxers who compete in the Olympic Games.

Another fighter at the event, Dwayllen Lyles, told the Tulsa World after the event that Clinkscale looked "very panicked" and "had a worried look on his face," following the match.
