Christian clergy in the Omaha area plan to announce their objection to discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The Heartland Clergy for Inclusion organization plans to read a proclamation calling for an end to all religious and civil discrimination against any person based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.
“We find no rational biblical or theological basis to condemn or deny the rights of any person based on sexual orientation,” said Rev. Jane Florence of First United Methodist Church.
Rev. Dr. Eric Elnes of Countryside Community Church, one of the event organizers, said silence by many has created the impression that there is only one Christian perspective on the issue. The group hopes Wednesday’s event will show another view.
Florence said that more than 100 clergy members in the Omaha area have signed the proclamation and that several of them will participate Wednesday. There will be prayer, Scripture reading and an apology for those affected by discrimination. Organizers have invited the Omaha City Council to attend, Florence said.
