Todd Bentley: “Cancer Smells Like Rotten Eggs”
Posted on March 7, 2011 by Chrystal Whitt

By now you all have heard that Todd Bentley was featured on a episode of Lisa Ling’s show, “Our America,” which is aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). The video below is just an excerpt from that episode, but it speaks volumes.

Lisa Ling asks Bentley how he got his power. He responds by saying, “I got it by believing that it’s available, and that it’s available to every day people that believe that God is who He says that He is, and He can do what He says He can do.”

The problem I have with this response is that this power Bentley claims that he has is not from God, because the power or pseudo-power he displays doesn’t correlate with Scripture.

I don’t remember seeing any of the apostles setting the example that Bentley sets (kicking people in the face, promoting angelic encounters and trips to heaven, etc.) Even if Bentley was doing everything the way the apostles did, he still wouldn’t be operating in that power because the power the Holy Spirit worked through the apostles ended with the apostolic era.

Ling asks Bentley when he realized he had this power and how did it manifest itself? Bentley then gives a very unbiblical and absurd answer. He says, “I started realizing I had a gift of discernment, and how it worked in me was through touch. When there was cancer, a certain vibration would come into my arm. I’ve smelled cancer too. Sometimes I can smell – not all the time – and I can’t turn it on and off.”

Ling says, “You said it smells like…”

Bentley interjects: “Cancer smells like – have you ever lit a match, and then the match goes out and you smell that sulfur? And what rotten eggs would smell like. If you could put those two odors together, that’s how I would describe cancers.”

Bentley may believe that discernment is a tingle in the arm or a rotten smell in the nostrils, but true Biblical discernment is the ability to discern truth from error. There is no hocus-pocus or liver shivers involved. What Bentley is doing can be described in one word – divination.

Can someone who has absolutely no Biblical discernment, someone who doesn’t even know what discernment is, be trusted to accurately teach God’s Word?

No.

When discussing this with friend Bud Press of Christian Research Service, he said, “Well, what does an amputated leg or a glass eye smell like?”

Good question.
