we have a yearly Omaha area event that some churches (most of which are WCA churches)

do something called Step Out and Serve Sunday once a year


tommorow is when this is happening this year


and I think while helping the community is good, and I am for all helping the community


something has me troubled among other things :

the ad in the half page ad in the paper today says they are doing this event based on Matthew 6:10
and lists the churches (some anyway) involved in this.


why the ad to mention you are doing if this is about helping the community only. as to why the ad. this almost sounds like Step out and serve is doing this a bit for attention for their churches.



I do evangelism work sometimes in Omaha area, but I dont put a page ad saying what I am doing and when. I perfer to be low profile like that.


I btw like what the folks who do this out at Step out and serve, but I wish there was more effort for the christian community to be involved in helping people more than just one sunday a year. something about this event causes my discernment radar to go off for some reason but than maybe I am over-reacting in this case.



however I am a bit worried and concerned cause many of the churches who do this are known to be pushing missional and in some cases contemplative and emergent stuff and there maybe more than just charity work involved in this event.



several are associated with Mike Bickle's IHOP movement and with the willow creek association.



out of the 17 mentioned (along with their church's links) in the paper: and there are more churches, but only 17 made this group's AD


5 are wca churches (BSLC, Dundee, King of Kings, Kingsway, and Trinity
1 had Richard Foster speak in 2008 and promotes contemplative agenda
1 is a catholic church

2 are ex-wca churches that are somewhat questionable at times (1 of whom is mentioned at inCommon Development of Omaha is a Interfaith agenda promotin group as it's churches that support it

4 (including one of the 5 wca churches) are into Charismatic stuff (including one non-wca church that is a known Hyper-charismatic church here in omaha)

1 is a UCC church
2 are PCUSA churches

and btw is a good Baptist church mentioned among the 17




plus, the churches mentioned I dont know of any evengelism outreachs any of them do in town (could be wrong)

though ex-members of a couple of churches who have been involved in this told me the yealry step out and serve event is a "missional" event. (i.e. no evangelism during this event, just works)
