Episcopal Bishop Calls Individual Salvation ‘Heresy,’ ‘Idolatry’

Published July 9th, 2009 by Editor in General News
One News Now brings us this story concerning the apostatizing at Warp speed Episcopal Church, ruled by homosexuals and women:

Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori says it’s “heresy” to believe that an individual can be saved through a sinner’s prayer of repentance.

In her opening address to the church’s General Conference in California, Jefferts Schori called that “the great Western heresy: that we can be saved as individuals, that any of us alone can be in right relationship with God.”…

And more from the very divisive homosexual lobby:

Meanwhile, six Episcopal bishops are pushing for greater recognition of same-sex marriages at a national gathering of church officials in California. Bishop Thomas Ely of Vermont says he and other bishops from states recognizing same-sex marriage will offer a resolution urging the church to adapt marriage rituals to include homosexual couples…

    BTW:

is it me or does Schori's comments

remind you of the emergent church crowd and their hatred of sound doctrine

when you are as spitually blind to truth as Schori

and her episcopal friends here in Nebraska

who are heavily associated with the universalism promoting group the Tri-Faith Initiative

they cant see they are the ones who are the deceived

    2 Timothy 4:3-4

    For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Oh Wow.....just WOW.........I am just at a loss for words here...

Does this woman even have any idea what will happen at that Great White Throne of Judgement at the end?

What will she say when the rapture happens, and she's left behind having to explain all these "mass disappearances"?

It shows that rightly dividing the Word of God has nothing to do with theological degrees and everything to do with a real personal relationship to Jesus Christ by faith and humble submission to the leading and work of the Holy Spirit. The priests, the rabbis, and the scribes of Jesus' day were the doctors of the lawq. They were highly educated men whose studies were both intensive and extensive. But it was simple Galilean fishermen and others of uneducated and/or simple standing who were our Lord's disciples on this earth and whom He used to build His Church upon the foundation which He Himself laid. Of the New Testament writers, Paul alone was a doctor of the law, but he could not be used until God had brought him to his knees and showed him his utter worthlessness and hopelessness and his absolute need to rely on Him alone.

Yes, this denomination has been getting worse by the day and it hasn't let up.

One word: emergent, which is where the denomination is going and actually is already there.

Thanks for posting this Buzz: it just solidifies my decision to leave this denomination because of such awfully bad doctrine.

Hopefully others thinking about joining this denomination will think twice now.

I think number 1, it is their subtle way of saying that they are both going ecumenical and emergent. Number 2, it might be that the Bishop sees themselves as the 'authority' of the church, and thus of 'religion'. As far as anything else she might view her job as being, one could only guess.

This proves that they are going ecumenical (on their website BTW): http://www.anglicancommunion.org/ministry/ecumenical/

And yes, I agree. If there is no personal salvation, the whole cross and Jesus' life during the first advent would then be in vain, which we know that is not true. He had a mission and focus to the first advent and that was for the personal salvation to ALL.

I am not sure why most parishes in the EC at this point have REALLY taken steps towards these aspects. I think all we can do is pray and expose the bad doctrine.

So true. God IS the ONLY authority, and He often chooses the most humble/uneducated of the bunch in order to carry out His Will.

It is my understanding that the Episcopal Church once upon a time ago used to be part of the RCC, but broke away from it? Maybe I heard it wrong, but was it something like this?

When I was an unbeliever, my mom, before she would go to her own church, would wake me up real early in the morning to attend the Episcopal Church in town from 1999-2000. I don't remember much about it b/c quite simply, I was an unbeliever then and my mind wandered. However - if memory serves, they weren't bad at all. They stressed prayer, the ministers would preach right out of the bible, etc. Although they did have their idiosyncrosies, they seemed OK.

It's not just the Episcopal Church, but even other fundamental bible believing churches are heading toward the ecumenical way largely b/c they got hooked, lined, and sinkered by "Purpose Driven Life". The big First Baptist Church in my city did THREE seasons on this. THREE(compared with just merely one that my previous church in New Orleans did). And it's fairly obvious that particular church is heading that way b/c when I and my family visited that church when we moved here 3 years ago, the pastor preached a very gooey message titled, "What goes on in sports games vs. the daily battle of sin in your life"(i.e. throughout much of it, it felt like he was having a conversation with you over who's going to win the Super Bowl).

If one really thinks about what is happening with sound Biblical teaching and religion today it isn't any great mystery. Look at the television. Television is the prime home entertainment of the day. Look at the alleged Christian programs that are on the television. Many of them are of the touchy feely kind. The heart warming without any real bible understanding kind. They are pitched more toward reason and logic than any instruction from the bible.

Television, as the prime entertainment, is much more expensive than radio. That is why there are more sound Biblical radio programming. So television reaches much more of the population than radio does, and even the church, because it appeals to the ignorant with feelings. People want to believe that they can be saved by a God of love. That this God places no restrictions on His love for man and will save everyone. Or God will save all that work for Salvation.

They are applying man's experience to God. So man is now not only misinterpreting the bible, but man is now misinterpreting the nature that God created as a witness to all mankind.

If you can't win than lose!
Don't jump at me I'm no conclusion

Yup.... and of course, for the homosexuals to continue "playing church", they have to twist the doctrine to fit their lifestyle and somehow justify it. I guess by saying "that (none) of us alone can be in right relationship with God" they are trying to lump us all together - hetero and homosexuals, and say we are all the same before God.

Scripture is clear on this matter:

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16, emphasis mine)

"But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. " (Romans 10:8-13, emphasis mine)

"And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." (1 John 5:11-13, emphasis mine)

If the Episcopal church is calling individual salvation "heresy", then it is calling the Bible false and God a liar. Scripture says on THAT matter:

"God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged." (Romans 3:4, emphasis mine)

    and

" I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. " (Galatians 1:6-9, emphasis mine)

FYI - did anyone see that Antichrist show the History Channel put out a few years ago? I saw it yet again the other night.

They interviewed many pundits(Hal Lindsey, Jerry Jenkins, and Joel Rosenberg being 3 of them). The Episcopal clergyman pundit REALLY knew how to use and twist his words. While he firmly believed in the pre-trib rapture doctrine, he did NOT think the final 7 year trib would be a time of wrath, but of grace and mercy to the lost so they could be saved. It made no sense at all, but if you're a baby Christian, or even an unbeliever, it's easy to get sucked into this cunning replacement theology.

The BIG thing to look out for is HOW these false prophets USE their WORDS. They may tell some truth, but they will cunningly mix in some deceptive lies that's easy to get hooked, lined and sinkered. Rick Warren is a master at this.

BTW - too bad about Ted Haggard. He was one of those being interviewed on that show(before his little scandal, that is) - alot of what he said was sound doctrine about the end times. Too bad he ruined himself.

    Saved, One-by-One
    Jul 10 by PastorDeBruyn

At the Episcopal Churches General Conference recently held in Anaheim, California, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, opened the conference with a stunning statement saying, “the great Western heresy” is “we can be saved as individuals, that any of us alone can be in right relationship with God.” According to the bishop-ess, “That individualist focus is a form of idolatry, for it puts me and my words in the place that only God can occupy.” Say what . . . ?

The third chapter of John records Jesus’ encounter with Nicodemus who by himself came to Jesus at night (John 3:1-14). John is clear on this. Two times he records that “a man” came to Jesus—one man, not two (John 3:1, 4). Furthermore, Jesus addresses Nicodemus in the singular personal pronoun “you” (Greek, soi; John 3:3, 5, 7, 11). Furthermore, the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus sees them mutually interacting as they use the abstract, but personal singular pronoun “he”—“when he is old . . . He cannot enter . . . he cannot enter . . .” (John 3:4, 5). In reading this passage, the only possible understanding is that salvation is individual.

So the bishop-ess’ remarks stand blatantly opposed to both the word and example of Jesus (John 3:7). It’s not whether we should believe we’re individually saved; it’s rather that we must be individually saved. As we are physically and singularly born by human parentage into this world below, so we must be born spiritually and singularly by the Spirit from above. God’s life comes from outside us that He may reign inside us. Salvation is one on One. Salvation is one by one.
