In other words, we need to get to the point where our flesh—the old man—has withered to just a nubbin and the Spirit of Christ has full sway. This is the ongoing process of sanctification. Too many Christians just don't bother with it. They get saved (if indeed they are) and then basically live not too differently than they did before ... except they likely don't drink or cuss or look at porn any more.
But becoming that is not the result of becoming a Christian. A worldly moral person, an atheist, or a pagan, can live a moral life. Christianity is a PERSONAL relationship with Jesus Christ. And being a Christian means dying to self. A daily dying, Jesus said. A progressive process, Paul taught.
But when you begin walking that path, the liberty, the freedom, is absolutely incredible. Freedom from tension, freedom from fear, freedom from worry, freedom from uncertainty; an awesome, liberating, heart-calming freedom ... meaning we have finally fully entered into His rest ... the true Sabbath! WE have fully ceased from our own works and rest WHOLLY on Jesus and Him crucified ... knowing that ALL we need is secure in His hands. I recall that someone once asked a true man of God, "How do I get to the place of victory I need. How do I find that peace in myself?" The preacher answered, "You can't. It's not in you. It's not in me. It's only in Him. But it's ALL in Him"
