Michael Newnham Cuts Loose
Oct 03
Pastor Michael Newnham has a sulfurous post over at Phoenix Preacher. He’s outraged that Steve Camp and I are drawing the line on filthy language from pastors in the pulpit.
My simple statement that I can no longer publicly endorse John Piper because of his inclusion
of these toilet-mouthed, profane preachers and conference speakers really popped Newnham’s cork.
Dipping his pen in vitriol, the pastor writes:
The most holy Ingrid Schlueter and the most reverend Steve Camp have taken turns over the last week ripping up John Piper for his “support” of Mark Driscoll and because Paul Tripp used a profanity in making the best apologetic I’ve ever heard against using profanity. Camp thinks that if you try to sound like you swallowed John Owen you are somehow holier than the rest of us beggars. In reality, both he and Schlueter sound like small minded, prune hearted, Pharisees.
(I cleaned that sentence up a lot and you’d be proud of me if you knew what I originally wrote.) Bold emphasis mine.
Hmmm. This is a pastor speaking. Now go back and read that last line again. I don’t think there’s a better way to make my case about pastors and their lavatorial language than that one.
Thank you, Pastor Newnham for making my point.
This is a spiritual leader, a shepherd, who thinks we’d be proud of him for cleaning up the filth that he originally wrote about another brother and sister in Christ.
No, we’d be proud of him if he would resign and get his heart right before he pretends to lead others as an example according to the Scriptures.
I am immovable in my conviction that using graphic language, including talk from the pulpit about (using Scripture verses to jokingly defend it), sex acts, using the S-word
and joking about sex with Jesus in heaven should place Mark Driscoll
and friends under church discipline until there is real repentance.
Mr. Newnham is siding with the new breed of vulgarians posing as Christian pastors,
and I take his reference to me as a “small-minded, prune-hearted” pharisee as a compliment.
Those who believe what the Bible says about filthiness coming out of our mouths will be called far worse before it’s all over.
