Golgatha - When the Rocks Cried out.
I don;t know how many of you have ever seen Golgotha, either live or in pictures, but my pastor visited Israel and recorded parts of our sermon there for our Easter celebration. I was so struck by the rocks at that place, and I waxed poetic about it, so... here is a bit of doggerel for you who like poetry.
It seemed like the very stones of that place were frozen forever in the terror of seeing their creator on the cross - and I thought of how Paul said "All creation groans" - you certainly get that sense from that place.
I call it simply "Golgotha". I hope you like it.
Golgotha
-David T. McKee
The place of the skull, empty sockets stare out from rock,
The elements looked on their maker as he bled,
The fractured stone, forever frozen in terror unremitting,
And screamed in the darkness as the sunlight fled.
All creation groans, here where the silent scream began,
And death’s face pressed out through stone, to grin,
When the eyes of forever closed and turned away,
And hell thought that it would win.
This then, the center of eternity,
Black ichor of hearts sin plagues,
The aleph of Heaven and Earth suspended,
Fills the cup He drinks to the dregs.
Trickles of water down the terror cast crags,
They wrap their stone arms around his still form,
Silence, pierced by sighs of hearts heavy with wailing,
Like a mother when holding a dying child forlorn.
But the stones cried out, just as He said they would,
They begged to be redeemed,
Three days and laughter tore out through the tomb,
The rocks willingly rolled away and bowed to their King!
Colossians 3:8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Dear God help me to take off these filthy cloths!
