Default Where do you live and what do you like about it?

I just finished watching a documentary about Denali National Park in Alaska. My father always wanted to visit Alaska but never made it. I asked him a year before he passed away if he would like me to take him, but by that time his health was failing and he was tired. He said he would just like to go to northern Michigan to visit the area where he grew up. Before it's too late for me, I also would like to visit Alaska, and many other areas in the United States, and even some places across the oceans.

I do love living here in Michigan. I love the Great Lakes, the inland lakes, rivers and streams. I love the many lighthouses, the Mackinac Bridge, Mackinac Island and it's fudge, Traverse City, Petoskey, Alpena, and the many marinas, including Presque Isle, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs. I love the forests, farmlands, Sleeping Bear Dunes, the old towns, and a few of the larger cities such as Grand Rapids. The Upper Peninsula is beautiful and very rugged along Lake Superior. My wife and I enjoy the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and a good play occasionally. Detroit, Pontiac, and Flint are about the only areas that we avoid. I love watching the Detroit Tigers, but admit I've never made it down to Comerica Park or the old Tiger Stadium. I enjoy the four seasons, but as I get older my favorites are spring, summer and fall. I still like winter, and the cold brisk air that goes along with it. I like to shovel snow, bring up wood for the fireplace, and spending time feeding and watching the birds. The winter after my dad died, I started seeing the Dark Eyed Junco. Some of these sweet little birds nest under our deck, and migrate down from their breeding ground in Canada. My dad loved Canada and I took several trips with him there to hunt and fish. When I see the Juncos I think of my dad. I look forward every winter to their return, and at every spring when I bid farewell to the Juncos, I'm greeted with the return of the geese and ducks. We have many waterfowl who nest in the wetland areas across from our home. Michigan is a great place to live and visit.

My wife, and I have recently begun to travel more, and this year for the first time, we've been to Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia. Gina has family in Kentucky and Tennessee, and we love going there to visit. If we didn't have family here, I don't know where we would want to live. My roots and family are here and they are for my wife as well, so we'll stay here unless God leads us elsewhere. I would like to know about you, where you live, and what you like about it. Maybe someday my wife and I will visit your State or country.

I live in Northwest Ohio. I don't really care for the neighborhood per se, and even though it's called a city, it's small. For the most part what I really like are the surrounding areas. We live close enough to Michigan, that we go there a lot. My parents have a house there, and we visit often. My favorite part is the flat, wide open spaces. I hate the winter, but only the driving in bad weather....the snow and cold don't bother me because I have lived in the north most of my life.

I have lived in New York, Boston, Florida, Pittsburgh (I despise the Steelers though), Chicago, and San Diego. I have family in South Carolina and have visited there. I have traveled to Paris, Rome, Versailles, Vatican City, Dublin, and Aruba. I like to travel, and even like to move to new places. My husband and I want to move somewhere, but don't know where yet.

Ever since Neil O'Donnel threw the Superbowl against the Cowboys, and two weeks later signed with the Jets....yeah, I don't like 'em. Incidentially, my husband is a Cowboys fan, but I don't have a favorite NFL team now. My son likes The Packers, but he likes any team that wins.

    Go Saints!!!!!

I love the people of New Orleans...they are each real & unique and total individuals.

Don't like to travel much. Came from a privileged upbringing (I suppose the world calls it that) As a child I loved being home but we were always flying around visiting people and seeing places. I also went off to a girl's boarding school in my early teens and would miss my home and my surrounding terribly.
(BTW, I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior as a young child and so I never fit in nor did I ever get attached to the things of this world.)

And so it goes DH and I live a very humble life not among the pretentious and ostentatious but people who are real.
We've talked about moving out of New Orleans when he retires. If we do, we'll probably settle on a little cabin or camp on a bayou.

I live in Hamilton Ontario Canada. I'm running a Thai restaurant here with my wife...just ma and pa type of restaurant where owners do it yourself and do it all. My wife is a cook and I do almost everything else from serving to cleaning toilets. Actually I prefer living in a small town. ( and I had a chance to live in small towns of about 5,000 people in Alberta before getting married and moving to Ontario.) But 5 years ago we thought that for a restaurant, we needed to be in a bigger city. After 5 years we really want to move out of this city. I bought a small cottage in Nova Scotia and hope to move there in the next 5 years if the Lord is willing to lead a simple and peaceful life there.

Wow, you've been around. I've been to Chicago. I went there, several years ago, with my wife on our twenty-fifth anniversary, and had a great time exploring the city in December. I worked in southern Chicago, back in the mid seventies while I attended a small Christian college. Paris, Rome, Versailles, Vatican City, Dublin all sound interesting. I'm not so sure about Aruba. I had some family that went there, and from the photos and literature they brought back, it didn't seem too great. I do have Irish ancestors, so how did you like Dublin? One day, if I'm able to, I would like to go to Ireland. I'm not crazy about planes. I flew out of Atlanta last spring and hated it. After a few hours in the air(we must have been close to Michigan), we turned back and returned to Atlanta because of mechanical problems. My wife, grandson and I, after waiting for several hours for another flight, decided to rent a Jeep and drive home. I was so glad to be on the ground and behind the wheel of a vehicle. What is one of your most favorite places to visit?

As far as football goes, I gave up on the Lions years ago. Even though they're in the playoffs this year, I've only watched a couple of games. The game seemed to be more fluid, years ago. With the instant replay, constant penalties and the players always strutting around every time they do something, it just doesn't seem to have the same flow. I've watched a couple of good college games this year, games that reminded me of how great the game of football can be.

I've never been to New Orleans, but have a nephew who lives there. A Thai restaurant in Ontario provokes some questions, such as what your background is, and how you and your wife got started. The small cottage in Nova Scotia sounds very nice. My wife and I have a small vacation home in northern Michigan, that sits on wooded acreage, mostly maple. We love it up there in the solitude and away from all of the traffic. At one time we thought of retiring up there, but as it goes with many plans, they change. Now with having a grandson and another one on the way, the thoughts of moving are on hold for many years to come, and we're happy with that. That small place on the bayou sounds good too.

I live in Sydney Australia. I love it because it is home.

I have lived elsewhere in this State and done a little travel. However I always want to go home.

What is nice about were I live? It does have lots of well known international tourist spots.

Since my hubby & I have always been poor in our health we have become backyard tourists.

We are within 45 mins drive to our nearest beaches or countryside. So in the past when we could we often did day trips, up and down the coast and inland into the countryside. We have some wonderful caves just 1 hours drive away. There are plenty of Reserves and National Parks with wildlife. There is one Reserve we used to love doing the 4 km walk to the waterfalls through bushland (I can't walk that far anymore).

Ocassionally we take the train to the City and you have the Harbour views, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, no matter how many times I go in are breath taking as the train sweeps past them. We can walk along the Harbour through our Central Park which has a National Art Gallery and Muesum located within it.

We haven't had time in the past two years to do any local tourism. Fortunately for us we have a few really nice parks and rivers near out home and we can go out for a cup of coffee and the occassional meal to one of these places.

So despite living in a built up suburb of Sydney on a main road near a shopping center and train station, we have some places to go to and escape the rat race.

If I could have travelled more I would love to have been able to go to Tasmania and New Zealand. I love places of Natural Beauty, looking out onto God's wonderful creation and marvelling at it all.

Robert and I live in a tiny house in the woods in South Carolina. I bought this place 11 years ago after moving east from Denver Colo. I just love it here! Its quiet, peaceful and simple. The air and tap water are really clean, and the land is largely unspoiled. I wash dishes by hand, dry our clothes on an old fashioned clothesline and don't get TV. What I love most though, is the wildlife. We have 3 species of lizards, who are curious and cute as they can be. There are also box turtles and rabbits in the yard, frogs breed every year in the rain barrel out back and I have seen deer many times. Sadly, the bird population has largely disappeared, I have no idea why, but there are fewer and fewer every year... Insects are also disappearing... When I first moved out here, the diversity of life was amazing. I miss that.

Life out here is simple and good. The nearest city has a church on every corner, and the influence of the Holy Spirit on the region shows in the kindness of the people and the low crime rate. Its not perfect, there are bad people around, but its still a lot nicer than most places.

Hannah, I really like your description of Sydney. It sounds like a great place. Meg, when I was in South Carolina, I was struck by the kindness of many of the people there, and I agree that it's the simple life that's best. When we go up north, that is one of the biggest attractions. In the evening we might go to the ice cream parlor and take a drive down the country roads just to see and count the deer. There's no cable, no fuss, just some good time to spend with those you love. We try to bring that home.

Can I pitch a tent in your backyard?

I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex it is a huge conglomeration of 100K population cities compiled together to make a montrous metroplex of humans. Okay, it really isn't that bad, at least we still have bits of open land between some (I said some, not all) of our cities.

Last year we moved from Grapevine to a smaller town North of the metroplex. I really loved Grapevine, I lived there from 1997 - 2010, so it was a bit of an adjustment to move away. God knew what he was doing though, my kids are doing great in school and my youngest son and my husband have both gotten saved since moving up here. We have found a great church and most of our life, that is not dedicated to making a living or posting on RF, is spent at church.

The thing I love the most about Texas is that probably 7 out of every 10 people you meet is a Christian, or at least they claim to be so you don't have to worry about the public school Christmas program getting shut down because they sang "Away in the Manger". Another nice thing about Texas is that the economy hasn't been as hard hit as it has in other areas across the nation. With that being said, it seems there are more and more people migrating here from places like California, and Detroit...it also seems like the Christian demographic is diluting.

I grew up in Joplin, MO and I still go back there a few times a year. Honestly, MO has my heart and probably always will. I got saved in the Ozark Mountains back in 1981, I was an 11 year old girl. I am living proof of OSAS. Only a few short years after I accepted Jesus as my savior (and knew what that really meant,( I grew up in church and never doubted that God was Jesus and the Holy Spirit, but accepting Him into your heart is a totally different matter than simply knowing something is true, just because you have been told it is true). Anyway, when we moved to Texas we stopped going to church and I never attended church regularly again until this year. Earlier this year the Holy Spirit punched me in the gut, I literally doubled over from the blast (not pain, pure love and energy) and I was immediately filled with the knowledge that there wasn't much time left to prepare my house. I have been so busy ever since trying to convince everybody that Christ is real, His gift is real, and time is running out.

I feel so blessed because God picked me, just as He has picked each and every one of you. I find peace knowing He has a plan for me, and I can relax because His plan is perfect and not tainted, for nothing of our Lord's could ever be tainted. So I can tell you where I am from, but I would much rather talk about where I am going. Love in Christ ~ Dianne

I was Born in Philadelphia, but I grew up in a "suburb" of Annapolis, Maryland (mostly woods on the severn river). I grew up swimming, fishing and crabbing in the salt water river, and running around in the woods!

At the age of 15, we moved to West Columbia, SC, where I continued my tradition of swimming & fishing in the river (which now was fresh water and freezing cold but I loved it cause the summers were hot), and running around in the woods...mostly owned now by the Zoo and not accessible.

I have been blessed to have seen several countries in Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong (just before it reverted back to China rule), in my time in the Corps. I wish I spent more time seeing the sights . I lived in Southern California for 2 years where the weather is, or was, predictably wonderful. The earthquakes I experienced were not too severe, but for a "back easterner" it was enough. Surprisingly, what I missed most were TREES! I love my trees, although here in the middle of South Carolina, most of the trees are pines, sweetgum, and a few oaks.....they are tall and green! We have alot of sand, red clay, and fire ants but thats okay.

I like the fact that I am no more than 1 1/2 hours from the beach in Charleston, 2 1/2 to 3 hrs from Myrtle Beach, and about 2-3 hours from my personal favorite....the mountains! I can fish for stripers in Lake Murray (15 minutes away), or catfish in Lake Marion & Moultrie (about an hr away). Though I haven't done either in quite some time!

I love where the LORD has placed me......

But LORD willing, my next move will be staight to HIM! And I will finally be home!

I was born in Detroit, Michigan. When about 4 years old the family moved to a small farm. At 8 we moved to an 80 acre farm where I did most of my growing up. Had a dredged creek that ran through the farm. Fished, swam and trapped muskrats there. Started out in a little one room country school - - the best education. Helped milk the cows, clean out the manure, and farm and harvest the fields. Had a nice vacation in Massachusetts and Thailand back in 62 - 65 compliments of the US Army. Rode a 305 Honda Superhawk from Frisco back to Michigan and struggled to become an engineer. After growing up on the farm I never worked a day in my life. If I wasn't physically tired at the end of the day it wasn't work. Have always liked Michigan because it is home.
