One of the columnists in our paper, who is black, said that when she visited Senegal she was greeted every morning by the host of the hotel with "morning n***er", thinking he was being complimentary. You see, since what he knew of the U.S. involved that garbage "gangsta rap", he thought he was paying her a compliment by saying it. She didn't know what to say, as she didn't want to hurt his feelings. After 3 days of this, somebody finally took the man aside and told him it wasn't a compliment. So, I definately can see that happening like you said.

Wow...that "N" word sure has lost/changed its meaning since I was a young girl! It used to mean: slothful, worthless, lazy, good for nothing....now it has a racial epithet to it only. I never did like it anyway.

I never heard the word until I moved to NC. I was 12 years old when I first heard the word and had to ask my parents what it meant. I was raised out in California and never heard the word until we moved east.

My how times have changed!

I think I heard that the couch was manufactured in China. If the manufacturer didn't think it was impolite, I've just gotta wonder about what kind of messages certain hip-hop & rap artists are sending to the world about the black community. In all honesty, I'm black (I was adopted & raised in a white family) & I'm absolutely appalled about how the "gangsta" lifestyle has influenced my school & the black kids in our community. We're having alot of kids move from the inner-city into low-income housing in the suburbs & now we've been having these street hoodlums instigating fights at our school.

I have a missionary friend in China who tells me we'd be amazed at some of the literal translations of Chinese to English. The words just don't mean the same to them as they do to us.

My heart says that the label wasn't meant as being derogatory.

Agreed. The glorification of "gansta" lifestlyes and all the killing, sex, etc. is just a poison for our kids and generation. Rock-n-Roll hasn't been any better either.
