Russia and Georgia at War

On Friday it was being reported that Georgia and Russia were at military odds concerning the break away region of South Ossetia. Fighting had broken out between Russian and Georgian forces with the death toll reaching upwards of 2,000 as of Saturday. According to aCNN article:
Georgia's parliament Saturday approved a request by President Mikhail Saakashvili's to impose a "state of war," as the conflict between Georgia and Russia escalated, Georgian officials said. Saakashvili accused Russia of launching an unprovoked full-scale military attack against his country, including targeting civilian homes, while Russian officials insist their troops were protecting people from Georgia's attacks on South Ossetia, a breakaway Georgian region that borders Russia.
As for casualties the article cited Russian Interfax news agency as saying:
Russia's Interfax news agency said the death toll was at least 2,000 killed in the capital of South Ossetia and claimed the city has been destroyed.
Meanwhile, Western countries including the US, NATO, and EU were hard at work trying to arrange a ceasefire between the conflicting parties. Georgia has a been a West leaning country lately and is currently in talks of joining NATO. This has no doubt rattled the nerves of the Russians and increased the tension between the two countries. The Georgian president stated in summing up the situation that:
The war, Saakashvili said, "is not about South Ossetia. It has never been in the first place. It is about destroying a small democratic nation aspiring to live in peace, freedom and liberty."
Bible prophecy watchers will need to keep an eye on this conflict between Georgia and Russia. Some, including Joel Rosenberg, have noted that Georgia could provide a future way for Russian troops to enter into the Middle East region for their ill-fated meeting with the God of Israel in Ezekiel 38-39. Rosenberg stated on his website that:
ALSO WORTH NOTING: Observers of Biblical prophecies such as Ezekiel 38 and 39 will note that directly or effectively controlling Georgia would be key when Moscow one day begins moving Russian military forces through Turkey and into Lebanon, Syria and eventually against Israel.
With mounting regional tensions and now a conflict between Georgia and Russia, Bible prophecy watchers need to remain sober and awake regarding things that are happening in the Middle East region. Conflicts such as the one currently between Russia and Georgia can erupt at anytime.
